I think musicians are suspects by default aren't we?

I can't even remember what it feels like to be stoned anymore!
I get my kicks out of watching TV and wearing comfy slippers.

The parents of a girl I had a date with back in 67 would agree with that. To set the stage, I grew up in a small and very conservative upstate NY city. No way would my parents have allowed long hair, etc. and I was barely able to convince them to let me wear clothes that hadn't been out of style since 1938. Also, I was a good student, blah blah blah ...

I get to the door only to have the mom meet me and tell me that "MY KIND IS NOT WELCOME HERE. Please leave her family along ... they want no trouble but they've already called the cops. If I'm not gone by the time the PD shows, they're sure I'll be getting many years in jail. So out of deference to them learning that my parents were decent people, they were giving me a break. Leave now and they'll let it go."

WHA?????? WTF had I done? Never even met them and the weirdest thing is that the dad, standing just behind the mom, was eyeing me up and down like I had leprosy. No, you can't even say long hair or hippie dress style -- I dressed and looked 100% straight at the time. The mystery wasn't resolved until the following Monday when she took me aside, apologized and explained.

Her parents were, in today's terms, far right fundamentalists. And the dad had just read some (in)famous book by a far right preacher that said that virtually all rock musicians were hard core drug addicts. And the few that weren't were almost certainly Soviet agents tasked with infiltrating our society and corrupting youth with drugs and rock music. Further, those rockers who had any beliefs at all beyond the next "fix" were Satanists and the more still-lucid ones were also dedicated Commies themselves.

He was looking you over, she said, to spot the "chicken tracks." Finding none, he concluded that I was even more dangerous than a stock drugged out rocker. Yep, I was a Satanist and USSR agent and the proof: no signs of heroin use, clean cut, good grades in school. Without the drugs, but in a rock band, that was the only other possible answer.

So there ya have it: we're all drug snortin', no morals, Satan spouting Communist agents out to destroy the youth of America. And what's even worse, I've worked in the movie biz for years so what more proof could anyone want that I've descended to the 12th layer of Hades. (Where, as director of customer service, I'm IN CHARGE!!!!!

Hahaha! I'd almost have wanted to marry the daughter just to shake 'em up further. Then start dropping the occasional "comrade". Hehehe!!

Great story...

No smoke without fire, eh?!

Seriously though. People who are that closed minded and gullible are the real danger to society!

Again with the "fire" ??!

Where's that Wish You Were Here cover pose picture?

Of course, I don't wish to meddle ... is there an echo in here?

Oops, pardon me  that photoshopping stuff was Snowy and Ceri, not you and Ceri ... seems I'm getting our UK contingent confused. Good thing it's just me ... carry on.

I think perhaps I misunderstood the brief on that one. Still, would have confirmed Philip602's girlfriend's parents' worst suspicions...

Italian customs officers share the view of 'rockers are evil incarnate'. They pulled me in at gunpoint on suspision of drug smuggling. I just got interrogated, the bass player and drummer weren't so lucky :o
As do
German (gunpoint arrest again),
English (swabbed me for plastic explosive),
Japanese (gunpoint again suspision of drugs)
Italian again (suspision of killing the pope, Absolutely hysterical- we were on the way into the country)

Infact the only place that didnt assume i was a heroin addicted, 70 reefers a day, pollitical dissident, was America. :?

I've heard similar tales from a variety of musicians-especially about Italy--especially, apparently, if you enter from the north.

Haha! I've been to Italy many, many times and only had problems twice. Once was when I was a teenager and frankly brought a part of my difficulties upon myself with my confrontational attitude. As it happens that was indeed on a northern boarder, rail crossing, middle of the night - very Midnight Express.

The other time was more recently, entering at Pisa airport. Having my baggage searched the customs officers found nothing more dangerous than a batch of pork pies. They fell about laughing; one of them said, "We do have food in Italy you know!" I felt like replying, "Yes, but not Melton Mowbray pork pies, my fine friends." But I didn't. Learnt one or two things over the years at least...

Cheers - C

EEEK, i only live 16 miles from melton mowbray. Perhaps the italians have a phobia of pies. I certainly dont blame you for taking your own food though. Have you any idea what its like being fed by vegetarian communist italians for 2 weeks. After we soundchecked they pulled all these tables out infront of the stage, with massive pots of food appearing from a side kitchen. Nyoki and pesto uuurghI lost 1.5 stone last time i was there. As soon as we got out the carpark at stansted i rang the missus and told her to get the chips on. After 2 weeks of 'nooooo nick, you must not eat the facist corporate mcdonalds', and ' coke a cola is a dictator buisiness', i'd of eaten roadkill. All in all though i enjoyed it.
The only time we did escape to mcdonalds we were so in awe of em selling nastro azzuro we spent a fortune getting drunk and didnt bother with food.
