I am working on "She Caught the Katy (and left me a mule to ride) by Taj Mahal (Rythum, lead, vocals)

I am jamming over "Smooth" and "Maria, maria" by Santana.

I am also working on "Someday Soon" by Judy Collins (Rythum & lead) Major scale lead is not my strong suit, so it's a good song for me to practice.

Hmmm... i improvise, and that's why i only know how to play 2 whole songs (purple haze and voodoo child), half of sunshine of your love and machine gun, the intros to politician, heartbreaker, and the ocean, The first 1 and a half or two minutes of Red House, and a bunch of a other songs and intros by Hendrix... jeez im a mess :D

But seriously, i improvise because i want to make my own stuff. The greats were rich and famous and loved not because of their ability to play someone else's fame, but their own, whch is what i do, and i never really plan on gong any further than gigs at the tavern :)

Mostly stuff I've come up with--refining it & coming up with new ideas for the rest of the songs.

There's the blues riff, the rock riff, the chord pattern, the other chord pattern, and then just playing chords & riffs--seeing what comes up.

That and odd covers of actual songs--that don't sound like the originals unless you listen real hard.

"Good Love is on the Way" by John Mayer. One of my bandmates wanted me to learn the song. I've never been a fan of JM, mainly due to all the tabloid press you read about him, but the main riff to that song is so darn fun to play!

Once again I'm picking up the Tele to try to learn "Hot Rod Lincoln" by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen. Classic guitar work by Bill Kirchen.

Today I have been playing Love and Happiness by Al Green. Marc Broussard has a notable version of this song as well. I just love the chord work in this song.

Have you ever done ' The Zoo ' by the Scorpions ? A real chunky, drive it home kinda thing. Simple but great fun.

I haven't played that song in years. I may have to re-learn it. I remember the majority of it except the lead. Thanks for reminding me of that song. The Zoo is fun to play.

In the same kind of style there is also ' Doctor Doctor ' by UFO,
There is a newer version with more lead guitar work on it.
All tremendous stuff.
Cheers Rhumba

Sultans of Swing and Freeride by Edgar Winter Group. Both fun as hell to play and fairly challenging, to me anyway.
