The only advantage to the upgraded version is the Greasebucket tone circuit.

If you can, go check out each.

My preference is for the "Upgraded" Model. Larger Headstock, Hotter Pickups, Jumbo Frets.

I am seriously considering getting a Highway One Strat to add to my collection, but which one is better? The older version with the small headstock or the newer one with the 70's style headstock? I am more partial towards the smaller headstock.

Other than the component differences listed - as far as looks, I've always been partial to the old smaller headstocks. Those big ones are pretty hideous to me, and I'd avoid it just for that. Silly maybe, but I can't stand the look of that big bed knob dangling off the end of the neck. (shiver)

... and that's what most people love about them.

I love my '07 Fender HWY 1 Stratocaster just the way it is. I prefer the older look of my Fender. If you can find the older models, play both and see which one you like the best.

Remember, the older models didn't have the reverse-wound middle p/u. Might make a difference to you. My original '02 Strat doesn't even have the Greasebucket tone circuit upgrade in it. It's still the guitar that gets the most play.

I don't know which one is "better" but IMO Fender ruined the Highway One with that large headstock. yuck!

cosmetically speaking I like the smaller headstock.
I have the grease bucket circuit on my Tele and it is the coolest thing.

WOW.

I like the older look of my HWY 1 Sratocaster. I guess that's one of the many reasons I chose it over the MIM Standard Stratocaster.

But if I could have afforded the MIA Stratocaster, well lets just say that my new guitar would've been the MIA American Stratocaster.
