'Am riding with Chet and Jeffo:

Just a clean cloth on the strings and never industrial oil on the fingerboard. If strings are vile and dirty, change them.

Hey, Ian, just whilst everyone's tearing you apart: pink picks? :D

Never mind, man. Pop round for a drink and forget all about it. And I can show you how I use anti-limescale drain cleaner on my CTS pots...

Ian dont take it hard mate. I think everybody suspects you of using it on a 54 strat thats ultra rare or a 58 explorer that you just bought for 2 mill. I too fail to see how thin oil (which is all wd40 is) could penetrate a polyurethane or polyester finished guitar. I'm not saying anyone here is wrong, the advice to err on the side of caution is always good advice. However the only person on this planet i trust to mess with the wood of my guitars uses wd40 to clean 5 way switches. Ive used it for years on a old 70's all original Jen wahwah. In moderation its a great thing for pots. Overdo it though and you can ruin stuff. Overdo cake and you ruin your figure. Overdo charity and you ruin your bank account.

 Luckily, people outside our island simply won't have any idea what that means. Phew!

I've been around WD-40 for a lot of years, and it does some really good things and some really not so good things (bad is such a relative term). It will function as a penetrating oil and will get into the smallest cracks and creases, includeing wood with a finish defect. It will also leave a film, even after wiped off. That film will tend to trap dust and crud. It eill clean off dried crud. i even know a couple of old guys who rub it on arthritic joints and swear it works. Oh, and it will displace water/moisture.

Hydorphobic: fear of water?

Hydrorepellant: displace water?

Just guesses, I'm not energetic enough to look in a dictionary.

I clean my strings the hillbilly way...pull 'em back and let 'em go. Sure, it knocks them out of tune, but it knocks out some of the stuff in the grooves in the strings too.

Yep, that's what I would have thought: that's why I had to look it up in the dictionary. Turns out "hydrophobic" contains both meanings. A fear of water, and the property of substances such as wax and oil of repelling water.

Weird thing, English, ain't it? Guess that's what happens when you build one language out of others...

And like I said before - get a life, Ceri!

Cheers - C

Ceri, you reckon you need to get a life, eh? Check this out!

In 1953, a fledgling company called Rocket Chemical Company and its staff of three set out to create a line of rust-prevention solvents and degreasers for use in the aerospace industry in a small lab in San Diego, California.

It took them 40 attempts to get the water displacing formula worked out. But they obviously got it right, because the original secret formula for WD-40 which stands for Water Displacement and which was perfected on the 40th try is still in use today.

Hooray!

See, I was trying ever so tactfully to stear this thread off in a different direction to save your frayed nerves. But you insist on bringing it back - we'll you're just a glutton for punishment. Got your crash helmet handy? Here it comes again...
