I have been trying to manage my band as well as possible. So far, we have had 2 members quit because they wanted everything to be metal, other than that, we're doing fairly good...up till now. Our frontman will literally not agree to anything. It started with songs (we're doing covers of songs), and now he won't even agree to try and get booked at any venues because "the pay is too crappy." Like we should expect to be paid? Be glad we got paid at all, right??

Now, the bassist and I are at a huge conflict debating if we should pitch the singer. The singer is one of our best friends and we really do not want to actually "fire" him. I know the people here have had years of experience at this kind of stuff, what can be done? :|

Sounds like you're stuck. When the singer won't agree to anything its time to move on without him.

so you agree to disagree, I think you should shuffle the cards & come up with a new & more agreeable (B) hand, life is to short & music should be a fun thing to do with good company

I think the word you're looking for is 'impasse', not impact. In other words, it sounds like things are going nowhere fast (the 'impasse' part), and that IS making an impact.

There's no I in TEAM but it sounds like this guy is definitely going with the ME ME ME in TEAM. It depends on if you want to live with his attitude or not, or if he's worth the trouble at all.

Didn't Metallica do that, except the other way around? Well...James sounds like a folk/country singer to me now, that is.

Any one member of a band that is causing THAT much controversy has got to go. It really is that simple. It's tough enough finding paying gigs and busting your hump night after night for little or no reward other than the joy of playing out.

Get a singer who wants to work with you. Unless you are a solo act, everyone has to compromise sometime.

I've played in a bunch of bands over a bunch of years and the "drama filled" ones never amounted to much. It is so much better when you can get a bunch of like minded, motivated musicians together. Even if maybe some don't quite have the skill level of those they are replacing. With a bit of work they'll get there and yeverything works out better.

I can see what you mean. At the church praiseband I'm in, we haven't found but one member who hasn't wanted to just show up on stage to show off. Never really found any others besides our new bassist (who is also the bassist for my band) who was really totally motivated toward making the music sound right.

you gotta have a talk with this fella. Myself i'd say something like, "look were a band we need to gig. your a mate and we dont want to sack you so can you re-think your stance on gigging or quit and let us find someone else".

You'll be putting the ball in his court so any decision he makes he cant blame on you. He has got a point though, toilet gigs are the worst you should atleast get your travel costs covered. The way i made money was to play for peanuts then make on sales of Tshirts and self financed Cd's.
On the point of covers tell him 'playing 1 or 2 covers is the best way to interact with a otherwise alienated audience that dont know you, everyone does a couple even springsteen and the stones'.

Also pick a style of music and stick to it. Dont try and play a couple of blues numbers then a couple of thrash anthems. It sounds ridiculous from a audiences perspective.

Hope any of that lot helps you mate, keep rockin.

What do you mean, "There's no I in tiem?" Just kidding!

Bands are always an interesting mix of personalities. The ego thing is always there. If it weren't, you wouldn't have a desire to play in front of an audience.

It's a tough job to have the brains, maturity and humility to balance the ever present, (and needed) ego and musical creativity.

I don't have the answer and I'm not sure there really is a perfect one. Just some things to consider - good luck!

Agree! If your front person is not on the same page as the rest of the band the advice is sound. His agenda may be deeper than you all appreciate.

I give you "The Rolling Stones" as an example of a band which survived for years because they were. "Guns and Roses" who, in my opinion made some great music did not, because they were not, and Axl definitely not.

The entity is 'the band', the whole, the sum of its parts, not the individuals.

Agree that it is not working in this form, and move on. Have your bandmate satisfy his ego somewhere else.
