I think the first riff I learned was Kiss-Christine Sixteen. First full song I think was Johnny B Goode. First solo was Journey-Who's Crying Now (still a great solo). I know, I'm an old guy...

everyone has a song that they distinctly remember as being the first they learned when they started playing guitar - what was yours?

mine was otherside by the red hot chili peppers. i still remember how stoked i was to finally be able to play a whole song (especially one that i loved) - it's funny looking back at it now because the song's so simple but i felt on top of the world for learning it.

mine was van halen panama

I'm having a hard time remembering exactly, but I think it was House of the Rising Sun by Eric Burdon and the Animals.

o geez... well the first riff that i learned was Smoke on the Water, but i think everyone learns that 4 chord riff and not much else of the song. The whole first song i taught myself was My Own Summer by the Deftones

The first song I learned completely was Jonny Cash "Folsom Prison Blues". I have been playing for two years now, and I have found that playing guitar is an ever evolving process. 8)

I guess I'll go with just playing the song all the way through. My measure (for myself) is playing the complete song and sing it as well. We'll not judge whether it's good or not, I'm from the thought, if "you're playing - you're playing - good, bad or ugly".
