A guy found an old photo on eBay and bought it for $2,200. Only two other photos have ever been published of RJ. There is a third photo of him with a nephew in his sailor's uniform, but no one is quite sure where that one is.

The buyer thinks the two men in this photo are Robert Johnson and Johnny Shines. I'm not sure. What do you think?

could be. I don't think so but then again I am suspicious by nature, and the guitar is not a gibson L-1. :?

every so often a "new" picture of Rj comes out, and every time it is proven that it is some one else, i saw this picture some time ago, i have my doubts that is is him....

I have my doubts, too. I think it's interesting that the cleanest part/least damaged area of the photo are the faces. Also, the image overall almost looks TOO sharp. Plus, it seems that one authenticated photo of Johnson showed him with a 'lazy' left eye. True? I don't see that here.

BTW - RJ passed Elvis as the highest earning dead entertainer. Not sure what to make of that.

Like Elvis and Kurt and Jimi and a bunch of other dead artists, he's not around to spend any of it. It kinda takes the buzz out of being #1 if the only person enjoying it now is some family member or a 'legal representative'--unless, of course, you're the family member or 'legal representative' cashing the checks.

The buyer of the photo is a vintage guitar appraiser. He dates the guitar to mid-1930's, made in Chicago. The guitar has no strings and most of the tuners are gone leading him to believe the guitar was just a prop.

I'm still not confident as far as authenticity. I hope I'm wrong, but the only source article I can find for this photo and the story is here:

http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/featu ... nson200811

Is this where we should be getting the skinny on music heritage--VANITY FAIR? Um, like no music magazine was interested? Also, I think that the 'authentication' process in the article is skimpy at best. Though if I blew $2200 on something, I'd definitely want to get my money's worth.
