Hey, I've been playing for a few months short of a year. I have a squier affinity strat and have a Fender Telecaster Thinline '72 on the way.
I hate the amp that came with my strat (fender frontman 15g) and have been playing through Garageband on my mac.
My mother approached me earlier as it is my birthday soon and she asked me what i would like. I have needed an amp for some time and was considering asking for one. The only problem is the budget will be around £170 gbp. I am really after a tube amp as I play mostly John Mayer and various other blues.
Is there one worth buying in this price range? I would be using pedals so it wont matter about having any fancy effects.
Hopefully somebody can help (my parents are not willing to buy something internationally).
Thanks

Well the price range limits your options somewhat. Here are some kinda cool amps that should fall within your price range (especially on Ebay)

Fender Blues Jr
Crate V32 Palomino
Crate V3112

Check 'em out

Mayercaster,
I use a fender vibrochamp round the house. Its only 5 watts but plenty loud enough for jamming and stage (if you mike it up). Loads of sounds in the amp, all good quality, and its a valve power amp section. The pre-amp is digital which proves my longstanding belief that valve amp tone comes from the power amp section. All for around £170.
I've played big gigs and own 2 marshall 100watt valve amps (jcm800's), This little fender amp leaves em standing for blues and country rock tones.

Thats quite some statement from me, i've always been a marshall devotee and not liked fender amps till i tried the vibrochamp.

thanks for the info ive checked them all out...
I'd already been looking at blues juniors but they are alot more expensive over her.
I now have even more of a dilemma because i remembered i reeeally want an Ibanez TubeScreamer TS9 pedal. Seeing as all my christmas presents have been bought already the only chance i can get is for my birthday. I started looking at those epiphone valve juniors because ive heard there ok. Mixed reviews everywhere though but if i got one it could allow me to get my pedal aswell on the same day.
Has anybody ever tried one?

EDIT: Nevermind ive been reading reviews and listening to samples of the Vox AD30VT and it seems it may be perfect for myself who only plays at home. I can probably also just about fit in my Tubescreamer aswell.

bmcmillin, I've been considering the blackheart. What kind of tone is it? british, highgain, Us clean or us highgain. Im after a quality clean tube amp for recording that gets the clean compression at high settings.

I have one of those, and It Sounds awesome ! I have had an Issue with after playing for a while it lets out a major hum/squeel. Not sure what cuases this, but I have to say I think it may be the tube.....It plays great when its working right.

You meen the vox right?^^

I think this might be the one for me seeing as every review I have read says nice things. I am also told that it sounds good at low volumes which is different to most tube amps. What satisfied me even more was somebody reviewed it and said that it sounds good with a Tubescreamer which is what i wanted.
I hope to god it sounds good with a thinline tele

Like you I have been playing the Affinity Strat for about a year and also not too pleased with 15G that came with it. Back in May I got a Blues Jr. and really like it. Paid $450 for it. Personal I thing it is the best value of the lower watt tube amps out there. At least in the US but I believe some of the Vox models are made in the UK which could be a price advantage.

Epiphone makes an inexpensive low wattage tube amp.

I was dead set on an epiphone until i researched further in and they get bad reception from most owners.
I havnt read one bad review about this Vox and then i saw this video sample/review (i can link you if you wish) and it looks perfect.
I will be playing John Mayer and other bluesy stuff , Jimi, Muse, Radiohead, RATM, Jeff buckley and any random song that sounds fun and impressive :)
My parents agreed to get me my Ibanez Tubescreamer aswell as this amp so it looks good for me :D

Thanks all for help , I talk all your help on board and researched each but just ended up on this Vox.

Niki,

I would classify it as US Clean. The overdrive starts right around the 7 or 8 on the volume on half power (at least on the Little Giant). I am using a Sovtek 12AX7 and will be changing the EL84 to a GT-Russian. It has great cleans but will get a little gritty at the higher end settings.
