I so bored at work I'm going flipping mental!

And I'm felling a bit bummed because my Telecaster headstock repair isn't going very well.

Polyurethane varnish takes so long to dry properly!
I could do with some kind of PU that sets with a hardener...I don't think such a thing exists?

Maybe I should have used Super glue, or nail clear varnish...
I'm guessing these sand up alright, but I need to be able to buff it to a shine with T Cut.

It looks like Polyurethane and patience is the answer...... :(

Urethane's a helluvalot quicker than nitro. I believe the likes of PRS use UV light to cure it - got a sunbed handy?

Anyway: tell us about that headstock repair; you can always pass the time that way. Lots of photos - we love that stuff.

And how can work be boring? I'd deduced for certain from the clues that you must be a Hampshire farmer, no? Surely there's always a cow that needs your arm up its backside - that must chase the blues away?

 - C

I would Love to put my arm up a cows pat pipe, but instead I have to talk to insurance brokers on the phone (My company is closing down so things are getting pretty quiet. I get made redundant on Halloween...Yay!)

So you are doing a poly drop fill repair. Was the finish damage doing a tuner change?

How can we entertain you, Ian? I'll tell you a cow related story...

My dad was friends with Helen Bellingham, sister of Lynda Bellingham who was in All Creatures Great And Small on the telly for many years. Lynda said that Christopher Timothy, who played James Herriot, was utterly devoted to the role and got very serious about the arm-up-the-cow's-behind scenes. No stunt man on those ones: all his own work.

In fact, he got over enthusiastic for it and couldn't be prevented from popping his arm up any passing animal, no matter what was in the script. "Christopher, dahling: time to shoot the scene with Lynda ill in bed with the flu..." "Oh, yes? All right, I'll just get my sleeve rolled up."

A lot of cows and sheep in Yorkshire with very specific memories of Christopher Timothy...

There, passed a few moments for you: lacquer a bit drier.

Ta-ta - C

Nicely worded! A polydropfillrepair!

The varnish decided it didn't want to stick any more!
(I have had 2 Classic series fenders and both have doen this! An 1.5 square inch popped off my Teles headstock when it was just under 2 years old, right over the Fender logo. I really baby my guitars and had a 'drop to my knees, arms in the air - whhhhhyyyyy!!!!' moment! Fender put a new neck on it)

I have done a few of them in my time. Super glue takes a while to dry as well. I have found when using super glue to thin it with drops of purified bottle water it drys clearer then tap water. I am guessing its because of the addatives in the tap. ( clorine, flouride ect.) You still have to let it dry good.

Good to know that someone has had a go and got it right!

As always on a can of Oil based varnish, it say's dry in 4 hours.
I just need to put it away and forget all about for a week.

I'm my own worst enemy! I don't have the patience to leave these things alone and i'm hovering around with the aluminium oxide and T Cut!!

Cheers

See, it just didn't occur to me that a thread started by Ian Sheridan would get all grown up and serious. But this one has. Now I feel so foolish.

So. To redeem myself here's a nice page about doing drop fill repairs. Ignore the adverts, obviously...:

http://www.stewmac.com/tradesecrets/ts0 ... clk=141631

I particularly like that strip sanding technique; it works well.

Cheers - C

Is the sound will still be the same after the repairs ? I mean, there won't be a kind of vibrations that could change the sound in bad ?

Nice link! I'm very grateful I was looking for ages for that kind of thing.

It's good to know that I'm traveling down the right road!

Thanks Ceri.
