hey everyone

I was looking at my newest American Musical Supply catalog last night and was kind of surprised to see a Boss DS-1 Distortion pedal for $40  . I'm thinking about getting it, or at least having my girlfriend buy an early x-mas gift.

Can't beat $40, right? Since money is tight this year I just don't want to end up wasting money. Anyone have the DS-1, or played it enough times to let me know if it's worth it? Any long term problem? Any performance/quality issues that would come up?

Thanks in advance!

Great price.
I've had one for over 20 years--still going strong.
Very versatile box. You can get fuzzy distortion, sharp distortion, just a bit of an edge, etc. It may not get the buzz saw of some of the metal distortions, but that doesn't bother me--it still works for metal, blues, classic rock, etc.

I also have the no longer made off shoot--the DF-2--the Super feedbacker Distortion pedal--where you can sustain a note as long as you keep the pedal depressed. It's the same distortion plus the sustain.

If you're looking and want a nice natural sounding distortion--get it.
It works well with both tube & transistor amps.

That is about the same price I got mine for, and I do think it was worth it.

Or throw one of the Monte Allums kits it and get something something that just doesn't sound like a distorted mess. YMMV.
Peace. J.J.B.

Mine can do distorted mess--but it can also do sharp so the guitar cuts through in a group.

I keep hearing this distorted mess comment from people about the DS-1--well it does more than that. If you only got distorted mess out of it--then you didn't try hard enough--because I got good sounds quite easily. Some of it is taste, but you can get a lot of sounds out of a DS-1.

Not to knock the mods, I've never gone for them as I'm happy with the stock sounds for what I play.

As for paying $9 more for a RP50--as jeffo46 says--it might be worth checking out--it depends on what sounds you like. Odd pricing in a way.

A month ago I bought a G-Dec Jr for about the same price I paid over 20 years ago for a Flanger--just a flanger.

Oh I hear you. One thing is though you don't have to spend a whole mess to get a great sound. Rather than getting that DS-1 now for $40 and then spending more money later. Spend about $100-150. Look at the Fulltone GT-500, or one of their OCD overdrives, even that MXR Zac Wilde(sp?) overdrive is very cool, a Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive breaks up realy nice, and the list goes on and on. Mind you none of these will give you an all out distortion fuzz, except maybe the GT-500 but it would do it with tone.LOL.
This is just an opinion and everyone has one and something else and they both stink. The thing is though if you can get the sound you want out of it, it is your sound and so be it. Peace. J.J.B.

Boss is an excellent brand. I own MT-2 and HM-2. I also have the overdrive/distortion pedal. Love all three. $40 bucks is a decent price for the DS-1.
