Okay, so i got a brand new Hot Rod DeVille amp, and i'm having a problem with it. I turn it on and let the tubes warm up, then take it off stand by. Then over a duration of about five minutes, it will make a loud static sound every now and then. It's worrying me, and i would like some help with this. I've never had a tube amp before. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What are you doing when the noise happens? Does it occur at regular intervals?

Some things to consider . . .

Could it be coming from your guitar?
Your cable could be "dicey" too.

I'd check those possible causes first.
if it keeps up, take the amp back and exchange it.

well, i bought a brand new cable, (which fits good and doesn't move around in either jack) and it won't do it as much the longer i let the tubes warm up. it takes about 6-7 minutes though. and once it happened when i struck any string on my guitar. also, i would touch the chord near the guitar jack and it would do it. it's also more of a screech than static. If i wait, then it eventually goes away and will play fine.

Did you buy it from a dealer like say Sam Ash or Guitar Center did you send in the warrenty papers to Fender, bring it back to the dealer, contact Fender you must do something, because ever one of your dollars was perfect to buy that less then perfect amp.

well my dad bought it off eBay from some company for my birthday. i know it was brand new as it was still boxed up, the tag was still on it, and the pedal was wrapped up. i still need to send in the warranty on it. i can take it to a guitar shop i know of and see what they say about it.

It sounds to me like the valves haven't been burnt in. Or there could be a problem with your electricity supply, or even one of the pre-amp valves could be faulty.
To burn the valves in-
Turn the amp on then lift the standby as you have correctly been doing. Dont plug any guitar cable into the amp and turn the amp up full, everything on 10. Leave it like that for 24 hours then lower the volume to zero engage the standby, leave it on standby whilst you have a coffee then turn it off. Leave the amp to cool for a couple of hours, then try it out at a sensible volume. Its a common problem with cheap chinese valve amps i'm very suprised your getting it on your classy amp.

To check the pre-amp valves-
Just swap em around (12ax7/ecc83's are the small ones) their quite interchangable. (put valve 1 in possition 2 and valve 2 in possition one and repeat the process till you've tried all the valves) Test the amp every time you swap the valves around. If the problem stops after a swap you know one of your valves is bad so buy 2 new ones and replace the 2 you swapped around.

To test your electricity supply-
Take the amp somewhere else, a mates house or similar and try it there.
I have terrible problems with a bad electricity supply in my house, take the amp to band practice and its silent till i play a note.

Hope one of them 3 helps you.

wow thanks a lot. i apprecite the time you put into typing that out just to help me.

by the way, i LOVE this amp. i put it on distortion and played an E, and it sounded beautiful and crystal clear. the clean channel is also amazing. quite an upgrade from my solid body amp that came with my Squire, which i have been playing on for two years.

again, thanks.

the first thing i'd try is swapping the pre-amp valves mate. Simply because its the easiest. Then i'd try it round at a mates house. Then i'd go with the burn in thing. If you do end up trying the burn in, make sure you leave the speaker connected. It can get LOUD, even the amp hiss will be loud at 40 watts, you may be better moving the amp to a garage or basement first. One other thing, your not near a switched on computer or tv when you play are you? if so move away from the screen, they cause terrible interference with singlecoil pickups.

I'm just interested to learn what are the typical settings used for an amp. I mean, I'm just learning and practicing in my room so I haven't developed a certain interest yet. I'm just using a cheap little Fender amp in my room since I am not aspiring to have real gig equipment anytime soon and I do not want to play something loud to wake my roommates. I'm a novice with these kinds of things so far.
