My son started with a low-end acoustic, it's basically Gibson's version of the Fender Squier line. It doesn't get much attentiion since we got our electrics.

How far should the strings be from touching the fretboard? They seem to be about 1/4 inch away from it at the highest frets. Near the nut, the strings are much closer to the fretboard. Does this mean we should just play it near the nut, or should it be playable all the way up the neck?

Thansk.

It should be playable all over the neck. the strings tene to be a bit higher on acoustiics but a 1/4 inch sounds a bit excessive.

To start you measure the string height from the bottom of the string to the to of the fret. Gibson Flat Tops are 3/32 Bass E at 12th fret and 2/32 treble E at the 12th fret.
