I bought the Hal Leonard book of Steely Dan sheet music, thinking it was for guitar. It appears not to be. The book doesn't have tabs, which is OK I can figure out the notes, but I strongly suspect that the music is written for another instrument, probably piano.

Also, I don't see a lot of the guitar music I expected to be there.

Are you familiar with this book?

It says it's for "vocals/piano/guitar". The only guitar-looking thing in it is chord charts.

Should I take it back for a refund, or can it be made to serve as a guitar music book?

Thanks.

That depends - do you just want to know the chords or do you want detailed tabs for the solos?

I'm not familiar with the book, but I've noticed that when seeing them play "live" they never do anything exactly like the original recording and most times it's been "better" than the originals. 8)

When it says "vocals/piano/guitar" it means chords--of course those may not actually be the chords any guitarist actually played--but more often than not the chords are based on the harmonic structure of the arrangement used in the book. Sometimes they'll work--and sometimes they'll actually notatae a guitar part in a meaningful manner.

Such books can sometimes be useful, but for the most part--be careful.

Then go watch this & laugh-
