I replaced the strings on my Variax with ClearTone 10-46 strings. What a huge difference. When play the bass strings now the whole guitar vibrates more than it used to, and the notes sustain a lot longers. The tone for some of the strings is different, and better.

I imagine that replacing with some less expensive brand might yield the same results. I just wanted to try the ClearTone strings to see if their longer life claim is true.

Do you have a favorite brand of less expensive strings that have such a big effect on your guitar?

I recently put on some Fender Original Bullets (.010 - .046) and like the sound of them a lot. Nice low end with smooth mids and biting highs.

I like GHS Boomers (.010 - .046). Great clear tone, and they seem to last.

DAddario EXL 115s for about 15 years now, DAddarios in total about 20 years. Great sound, feel, price, and durability for me...

I've played with them for 6 years. Love 'em.

I'm actually rather surprised about the amount of sustain I get out of Gibson .9-.42's. They feel silky-smooth too, well, to me anyway.

For my bass, I always buy Fender's strings. These are the expensive ones but I really have a good sound.

'Have fallen in love with DR flatwwound .011s for lounge, surf, island, Latin, jazz on Strat and Jazzmaster. Really nice quality strings.

And D'Addario .012 Phosphor Bronze on the Variax Acoustic make it really sing. Really improved especially the neo-turd 'Jazz' setting.

Yep. I've tried pretty much everything. D'Addario's are my favorites though. Last a long time (and i'm pretty hard on my strings), love the tone and they sound good even when they're old.

Some close runners-up are GHS Boomers (but break easier for me), and EB Slinky's (last long, but tone isn't quite as good to me).

DR's are crap for me. They sound ok but I break them like rubber bands. They never last longer than maybe a week.

I use Fender Super Bullets, D'Addarios and Rotosounds fairly indiscriminately (though not mixed within a given set). I couldn't honestly say the bullet ends on the Fenders make a vast difference with intonation, but they're fine. With D'Addario you can buy singles, and Rotosound give you a spare e string with each set.

On an online string seller's website I came across one guy asking if Rotosound Pinks were actually pink? Now that would be cool! Sadly, the answer is - no.

Cheers - C

I use Gibson Masterbuilt 10s on my Blues Jumbo J-185 EC acoustic/elect. and love them. Never tried Gibsons on a true electric! 8)

I've been in the process of trying Dean Markley Blue Steel, Ernie Ball Super Slinky, GHS Boomers, and a few others. I always seem to go back to my Fender Super Bullets for Strats, and Super 250's for Tele.
