These days I play primarily at home, though I guess technically this group of friends I play with almost every week is sort of a band, we don't play out at all. We've played a few parties, but nothing official. I wouldn't mind playing out, but I just don't have the patience to find people who are into doing the stuff I am interested in doing. The guys I play with are into metal, and while I like metal, I want to do something thats heavy, but not necessarily heavy in a metal sense, if that makes sense....

Find a jam somewhere. Ask around at work. Find people that play and get together and jam some. You can pick a set of songs you want to try and work on them at home so when your next practice comes around, you won't be sitting around asking if they know (insert song name here). Keep it up. Practice a couple nights a week and leave some practice time at home on off nights. Build up your set list. Typically, you need between 50 and 60 songs, enough for 4 sets (45 minutes playing, 15 minute breaks).

Challenge yourself. Pick a song you think might be too hard and work on it. You'll be surprised at how fast you pick it up and all of a sudden you're playing will blossom. What once seemed hard won't be anymore. I call them Eureka moments.

There's much to do. Get your equipment set while you prepare. You'll need a PA, Compressor, Effects, Equalizer, Mixer, Mics, Stands, and if you want to go all out, lights. Learn how to use everything. How to tear it down and set it up. When you're close, go see some local bands in your area. Ask to see their rigs. Watch the dance floor when they're playing. See what songs work and what songs don't. When you're ready, record and listen to yourselves. Don't be discouraged. It can take years to gel. Then find you a bar close to home and go play there. Polish everything up and you'll be ready to play out anytime...anywhere.

It's a lot of work, but it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
