my fiancee is a musician. a sax player that i've converted over to guitar. she needed an musical outlet to express herself, and sax is just too loud in our apartment. so we bought her a guitar and a decent practice amp, and she's getting there.

we definetely see eye to eye on the need to play, but there are somethings we dont click on yet.

i've been involved with music since i was a kid. choir since i was 10, did honour choirs in universities when i was in highschool, played in band since i was 12, (trombone, i know) and cadet marching bands (drummer), and screwed around with guitar since sometime in highschool, so i've really learned alot of musical theory, and different styles and i like to think have a decent understanding of music, of both the emotional side, and actual gritty on paper formulas and junk side.

she didnt have that kind of experience. she was in band programs in school that just tossed you an instrument and how to play, but never the why's or theory or anything like that. so she asks me for help, and i give some long complex answer to her that makes no sense, that is a simple fundamental to me, IE:Intervals. usually goes something like:

Her:Eirik, what's the next chord?
Me:(just kinda listening to what she was playing while doing something else) Sounds like the 4th above it
Her:4th? *blinks*

and it blows up from there. i've learned that as much as i'd love to be involved in her guitar learning process, i've pretty much have to step back entirely. I got her a good book and teach her warm ups, but the rest is all up to her.

out of topic (sort of) my parents don't get it. All these local mucicians tell me you can never have too many guitars and they say "DON'T TELL HIM THAT!!" they don't get how there can be so many guitars

My wife is definitely a keeper. She plays piano so the music thing to her isn't strange. She looks at my guitar habit as investments and in reality since I generally buy used, good equipment and am patient about getting the right deals she's right. She understands that unlike her piano different guitars for different tones. Now the stack of amps is a bit different but in all she's cool. And after 27 years of marriage its cheaper to keep her at this point!

my wife gives me grief. She said to me " You have two hands, why do you need more than two guitars?" I responded " You have two feet...what's with all the shoes?"

She's not into the time I take to practice, but she's out in front having a great time when the band is playing at a party.

My wife isn't a musician and that's why I bought a CIJ Jag and not a AVRI!

An AVRI (or an original Jaguar), would have got me divorced  Hell, we don't even like the same sort of music!

I also have a forest rally car ("pro rally" in the USA) that she doesn't really like having around any more but puts up with it :P

You see guys, I didn't get married until I was 41... and she is 15 years younger than me so I am very set in my ways and she, well, she has her hands full with me and my "hobbies" :P

I should add that she is fine with me spending time doing stuff, it's just the "spending" she worries about.

Hey, the kids can survive on music and rallying, can't they?

My wife met me as a musician, dated me as a musician, and married me as a musician. She plays bass and piano. Complains when I don't play enough (she says I get cranky when I don't). She had hand surgery last Friday. After she got out we stopped at the guitar shop (support your local mom and pop guitar shop!). I pulled the spalted maple off the wall and started playing. She saw it and said "I know you will be a crab $@! if you don't bring that home so you better do it." She thought it was way too pretty to pass up on. I am very blessed with my wife and my family and always appreciate them.

My wife won't go very often, but she goes. She doesn't complain about my purchases because it's my job....and a tax write off....
but she loves to hear about the history behind songs, musicians and bands. That way she can enjoy the concerts more.

All in all, she's very understanding as long as I take her along for the ride.

In a word YES !!!:D
I was playing in a band when I met my wife so she already knew what she was getting in to. She has been wonderful, actually bought me some of my favorite toys. Just this last year for Christmas she got me an Epiphone valve JR. after having to listen to me hammer away on one at guitar center for quite a long time. She asked me if I liked the guitar, I told her I didn’t bit I loved the amp. She’s also got me a boss DR-670 drum machine and the best one of all, for my birthday about ten years ago I unwrapped a 70’s Cort 12-6 double neck loaded with Carvin pickups (ala Jimmy Page) that I had been drooling over for a couple months. Yup, I’m keeping this one!

Interesting question--After 3 wives that despised my playing and discouraged it every chance they had, I now have a Sig/Other that really is into my music. Biggest problem, if the amp gets dust on it, she has to clean it, and when I think I have it all ready to go---the knobs are all outta wack--but no problem, have learned to check it now. As for the "Baby" she lets nobody touch my guitar, and its always shined up like brand new. I got out of playing for about 10 years, and we had known each other for a long time before she knew or even heard me pick. Now she says, you put it down again, your outta here--lol. I have the best support any musician could ever have.

I can relate with those that had a tough time getting started. I joined band when I was in the 7th grade. The teacher didn't like me so I couldn't get any help when I asked. When I decided to quit he told me I would never be a musician anyways since I didn't have an ear for music. I had to literally beg my folks to buy me a guitar and was CRUSHED that Christmas morning when I came downstairs to find that shiny new Decca flat top sitting there WITH MY SISTERS NAME ON IT !!!!!!!!!!
She wasn't any more interested in playing guitar than our dog was. So now I had to beg her and kiss her irritating butt every time I wanted to play it, which I did for every single day for about two years before my folks caved and bought me my first guitar. Then after taking lessons for four weeks (which was all I could afford to pay for) to learn basic chords, I got into my first band (The Wharf Rats). We could play 11 songs and I swear every one sounded exactly the same! What a hoot!
After that I got into my first band that did gig's and played nearly every weekend for the next 25 years.
So much for the theory that I'll never be a musician!

Kiss that Teach !!!
