My first Fender was my MIM Tele. After about a year and half a big patch of varnish lifted from the headstock and fell off exposing the bare wood. Fender UK were pretty good and changed the neck.

A while later I bought my MIM Strat (thinking Lightening Can't strike twice, right?) After a few months a small patch of varnish fell off the maple fingerboard! Fender repaired the patch (although I reckon I could have done it better myself).

Today I notice the varnish lifting from the replacement Telecaster neck around the A string capstan!

I'm truley bummed. I feel like selling both Guitars on Ebay and buying an Epiphone!

This hasn't happened with any other guitars of mine (Squier bass, old Fender acoustic), so it's not the environment they are stored in.

Both guitars are from the Classic Series.

Anyone else have a similar story?

1) Dont' go to the darkside (epi) Fender rocks
2) Man that is really odd that the same thing should happen.

Are you using some type of cleaner that is causing the finish to peel?
One of my sons owns a MIM Jazz bass, no issues with flaky varnish. Did you buy them from the same store? Maybe it's something there that's causing it.

refinish the necks yourself and call it "custom"?
leave it alone and call it "relic'd"

They still sound good, correct?

NIce advice! Thanks.

I only wipe them with a dry yellow duster.

(And if I sold them both I would buy a $@! Tele with Bigsby! Those Epi's etc are ugly!)

Never even heard of the varnish flaking off. That's weird.

'Instruments kept near any extreme heat changes or chemical fumes or something which is anti-varnish?

Right so I've decided to stop whinging and be pro-active!

I've got some polyurethane varnish and I've sanded the offending area.

I've since applied a bit of the PU over the bare wood.
In a few days I'll sand it back and T Cut it.

Wish me luck. I hope I don't $@!& it up!

Ian I don't have a problem with flaking varnish, my problem is with my MIM standard tele's neck, at the F fret after the high E across the whole width of the neck it looks stained or dirty, it looks weird but that's the way I bought it and the stain is under the varnish. MIM IS MIM AND MIA IS MIA
it is what it is.

Okay, so I blobbed some polyurethane on the bald patch.
In a few days I'll sand it down and polish it up.

Wish me luck.

Cheers mate, that's nice to hear.
I'm not to skilled with this kind of stuff, and it's been over a week of fiddling about with white spirit, varnish, sandpaper, T cut, etc!

I'm glad to have it looking ok, with the strings back on!

I hope it doesn't happen again!

Excellent quality pics, Ian. You really are a rather fastidious knob fiddler, aren't you then?

Well, you're either being crafty with your photography lighting or did a nice job. Well done, Ian.

Now, how are you at French polishing? Whiskey bottle stains on the wife's antique table...?

Cheers - C
