I've been looking for an excuse to buy a Gibson es335, but keep getting foiled. First it turns out my Variax has a good Gibson ES335 shound built into it, and second is that I just heard a guy play the same good blues tune on both a Gibson ES339 (a 335 sound-alike) and a standard Stratocaster. The Strat version sounded better. What's a GASer to do? Argh!

Um... Why are you so insistent on a Gibson if the Fender sounds better? I'm just curious.

It's because Gibsons are the guitars I want to like and feel I should own one, but there never seems to be a good objective reason to buy one. There's always something better at a much lower price.

Dude just buy it because you WANT it. That's what GAS is all about.

What is a GAS wannabe? Either you have Gear Acquisition Syndrome or you don't...Either you always acquire gear or have the urge to acquire more gear...or you don't. It is like an addiction. If you don't have it, you want it, and when you get it you want more. It sounds like you have GAS...no wannabe junkie, you is full on junk sickness

'Been in with the guitar-ly crowd a long time, and do not ever especially remember hearing somebody say...

"Man, y' know, I bought an ES-335 (or) Jazzmaster (or) Stratocaster (or) Les Paul (or) Telecaster (or) SG (or) D-28 (or) 6120 (or) J-45..."

...and say, "Man, y' know, this guitar really sucks."

Acquisition of a true Great is much more commonly the beginning of a long, long musical and tactile love affair. Oh, sure there are a few exceptions, but the rule is what is being spoken of.

'Am a Variax-er, too, no regrets. But when you want to HOLD and PLAY and dig the VIBE of the real thing, "Ain't nothing like the real thing, baby," to quote a musical sage. No substitute. Can't fool your soul.

So go buy a freaking 335. And if you don't have one, add a Jazzmaster to the harem. Hot stuff.

You will be so happy, you will go scooting across the shag carpet on your butt with your tongue sticking out like a Golden Retriever.

If you already have an ES339 (smaller version of a 335) why do you want a 335?

I find that my CS336 (Custom Shop version of a ES339) is a much more comfortable guitar to play than the 335's.

Sit down with your ES339 and play it for a while.

Sounds like gibsons pr people worked a number on you. You are very right, theres much better gear at a lower price. The stuff of a comparable price is much better.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with adding a 335 to your ever-growing collection! I say you do it! Plus, why would you want a guitar that's only pretending to be the guitar that you really want?

(subliminal message)
Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it! Do it!

Why buy a guitar because you want to like it? That makes no sense. You want a Gibson but never buy one because others are cheaper and sound better. So you're going to spend close to $3,000 just to have a Gibson? if you can afford that, cool, go for it. Just remember, you're not going to play it because you like something else better. It's going to be a $3,000 ornament. There's nothing wrong with just saying "I'm not a Gibson guy", which apparently you aren't.

If you absolutely have to have a 335 for it's tone, try an Epi Dot and save yourself a few grand.
