I've got a damaged knee and sitting in a regular dinner-table style chair playing guitar hurts after a while. Do you have any suggestions?

It seems like a lot of guitarists like bar stool type seats, but that doesn't seem like a good idea because there's no back support.

I haven't tried one, but the folks over in The Acoustic Guitar Forum - http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82689 seemed to like the Sound Seat - http://www.soundseat.com/ - a little expensive, but it sounds and looks like a great seat. It is available with 2 different back supports - it looks good to me.

And look at these adjustable ones from BBR Woodworks - http://www.bbrwoodworks.com/adjustable.html - they look nice too - and again I've not tried one, but they look comfortable.

Hope this helps, me, I'm using a $10 used wooden stool I got from a local antique dealer - the stool is not an antigue, but a nice little stool - I'm going to actually finish it and pad the seat.

I split my time between sitting and standing. I'll sit just about anywhere except the floor (that wreaks havoc with my back after awhile)

Maybe try an ergonomic office chair for Office Depot or Staples or some such place

A buddy bought a SoundSeat and it's rather hip, 'bout $200.

I sit in my desk chair and put my feet up on a stool and lay my guitar across my chest. Pretty comfortable for me.

Yes, foot stool is my suggestion, you can buy adjustable ones to regulate the height.

I got an expensive office chair and left off the arm rests. It's comfortable and without the arm rests there's plenty of room for the axe.

I bought one of those ergonomic office chairs. It's height adjustable and the arms can be detached fairly easy. Got it for about a hundred bucks at one of those office supply stores.

I use it all the way up, my wife lowers it to the bottom.

The only problem is when my wife has been using it and I forget to look before sitting down. (ouch!)

One of my problems is lower back related. Also arthritic knees. This chair is about as good as it gets. Also, the wheels are nice for going short distances like across the room for another pick, or over to the amp for an adjustment.

I use a nice Tama drum stool. a good sturdy seat and you can adjust the height to what feels good to you at the time. Sometimes I set it height high and use a foot stool and other times I have it low and stretch my legs out. I am over 6'4" so I needed something that can vary in height ajustment.

I found a n old dining room chair that has a cushon for the seat. It does not have the back rest on it. It is comfortable for me to play on. It might not be good for your back. I also play while sitting in a Lazyboy chair. I do perfer to stand to play.

The solution is that I tried my wife's office chair without the arms on it, and that works fine. It's one of those padded chairs with wheels on it. Office Max and similar places sell them. The old chair was an antique that was just too short for me.
