I've learned enough songs that I'm starting to forget some of them and have to sit with the guitar and remember the tune. I haven't had to go back to the sheet music yet. Is this a typical beginner phenomenon? Or is it normal to not retain songs you've learned?

I wouldn't worry about that: it'll come in time.

A bit like learning to read. At first you have to sound out all the words letter by letter; later you just recognise words by their whole shape; later still you're speed-reading page by page.

You'll reach the point where you don't usually need to be told the chords of a song; you'll just hear Dm, C, A#, A - or whatever - and know what it is. Same with lots of licks; you'll know by ear what the guitarist is likely doing.

With the easier stuff, that is. You never stop learning: I was struggling with a Robben Ford type passage the other day and I was right back in kindergarten!

Keep practicing, keep learning.

Good luck - C

I forget stuff too. Like I used to be able to play Purple Haze and now I don't remember anything but the very beginning. Most of my repertoire is gone; forgotten. I must be getting old. :D

It is 4.15 in the afternoon. How can you have drunk that much tequila already?

BTW: do you want to borrow my dagging shears for your dingleberries?

I have a friend with "photographic" memory who never seems to forget even the most subtle nuances of any song he's learned in the last 30 years. I can ask him to play a song he hasn't thought about in 20 years and he will instantly play it flawlessly.

I used to play in a band with him so I knew all the same songs. However with me it has always been a "use or lose it" proposition. Unless I frequently play a song I often have to sit down and remember it before I can play it. I usually don't have to refer back to the recorded version or any sheet music but I do need to run through the chord progression, lyrics, and any lead lines before I can play them fluidly. Unfortunately if the song is relatively complex and I haven't played it for many years I may have to go back and learn it from scratch.

Usually if I have an upcoming rehearsal, gig, or even a jam I will sit down that day or the day before and do a quick run-through of any songs that I haven't played for awhile. This does the trick for me.

My point is that memory may be an individual thing and you have to work with what you have.

Certainly not sir! My Dingleberries are the talk of Hampshire, and the envy of the neighborhood. They truly are a wonder to behold, and no 'dagging' nor 'shearing' will ever be undertaken in their presence.

I bid you good day.

Haha! I nearly, nearly went and took a photo of myself with a real pair of dagging shears I happen to own to post here - but then I realised I hadn't myself drunk enough tequila yet to be quite that obsessive. Not yet...

Arrivederci - C

I was trying to play Blackbird the other day and it took me a while to recall it (hadn't played it in about 2 years) . Once I got the opening down the rest came back easily.

You should be able to plug in a larger memory card in the expansion slot.

It's all hiding in there, and eventually comes back.

I was just randomly riffing a few weeks back and found myself playing a tune I wrote when I was 18 that I had complete forgotten existed.

I find that I have to play songs from time to time, to keep them in my memory. In fact......there are some songs that I haven't played in a while, and will probably practice them later on today. Today, I'll just go through a lot of old songs that I haven't played in a bit.
