To me, a guitar is really just a tool. It has to be good quality but then so does my #2 Phillips screwdriver. I never paid any attention to the vintage guitars (which I always used to call "used guitars"). Now I'm somewhat educated on them.

It's amazing how much money you can tie up in a guitar, and how valuable some have become. One of my favorite features on vintage guitars was a youtube show-and-tell by "John 5", who shows off his Telecaster collection. It's very impressive. Search youtube for "john 5 guitar collection"

I've got a Strat that's "sorta vintage". It's a natural finish 1974. I bought if for $125 at a pawnshop back in 1980 (with the Fender hardcase. Now they are going for $2000 - $4000.

(I've mentioned it before, but...) I read that Chuck Berry's retirement plan since a long time ago consisted of buying a new ES335 and a new Cadillac every year and squirelling them away unused. Don't know about the cars, but have you seen the price of vintage Gibson 335s these days?

The way the stock market is performing I reckon Chuck chose the right investment...

Cheers - C

Well Ceri, Stocks are only "make believe" money anyway, and tied to a highly volatile value marker (as we have all recently seen). I realize people make a ton of cash on them but if you really think about it, it's kind of nuts.

ie:
 I have a piece of paper that I bought off of Dude A
 I hold on to it for a little bit
 Dudes B and C buy identical pieces of paper from Dude A.
 Dude D sees me and Dudes B and C buy the paper and figures it must be worth something so he buys another piece of paper for more than I paid for it.
 Dude E then buys my piece of paper from me for more than I paid for it.

IT'S JUST A PIECE OF FREAKIN' PAPER!

The up side . . if lots of people buy the paper it's percieved value goes up.

When alot of people sell the paper, it's value goes down fast because it's not tied to anything "real", just how many yahoos are buying or selling it.

We'd all be better off on the barter system.

Yes we would!!!!!!! We would trade things of real value. Like cool guitars, great fly rods, fast cars,..................... It could work no?
Excuse me for dreamin'. But for the Barter system most definately. LOL.
Peace. J.J.B.

Yep, that's how economic bubbles work, all right. Mind you, it's no different with "vintage" guitars either. That's only perceived, notional value. Really, it's just a couple of lumps of wood with some old paint and some out of date electricals.

To prove the point, let's return to your barter system. I'll swap you my 2005 American Strat for your 1950s Les Paul 'burst. How's that?

Somewhere around 1976 a friend's family offered me an old stratocaster that they claimed used to be Chuck Berry's (apparently their uncle had some connection there). They wanted $200. I was in 6th grade and even though I really wanted a strat, $200 seemed like too much to pay for a "used" guitar. Still kicking myself for that one.

In the late 70's a friend of mine played nothing but ES-335's. He always told me to forget about strats and to buy a 335 because they could be found so cheap and were great playing guitars. His guitars all played like butter and sounded great. He was paying about $200-$250 for them and they could be found in almost any Houston pawn shop. I should have stocked up on those. Kicking myself.

Seems to me that people thought of old guitars as "used" until SRV became popular. Then used stuff became "vintage"and I haven't seen a 335 in a pawn shop since then.

Silverface Fender amps used to be a dime a dozen at pawn shops. You practically couldn't give the things away. I almost never see one any more.

Ach, the barter system???

So when I take a payment for some ones cell phone bill are they gonna bring me a goat?
"Sorry miss, you went way over on your text messages last month, I'm gonna need that goat and two chickens."
"Oh you don't have two chickens?"
"You have two eggs and I should wait 12 weeks? No I can't do that."
"You're getting 10 goats and 20 chickens from the economic stimulus package? Well come see me then."
"What do you mean, 'Come on times are hard?' Don't I know it! I had to put 10 cows down for my new car!! Gas is 200 ears of corn a barrel! I have to strap a heifer to the hood of my car every time I fill my tank." "My Farm of America checking is down to a blind steer and a mute sheep dog"

PS
Shame on whoever said they would trade a strat for a gibson.

Hey if you don't like the barter system, we could always protest to the Government and insist that the US currency go back on the gold standard. Yes we would have less cash, but that cash would be tied to something of value (gold). The currency would be very stable. This could only benefit the economy.

Shame on me, then!

Do you happen to know how many excellent modern Strats I could buy for the cost of a late '50s Les Paul, no matter how ropey its condition? You dislike that LP so badly? Then c'mon, make me the swap!

Ynwie Malmsteen has a pretty serious collection. From watching these videos, its obvious that he regards them as just tools:
