I've had my wonderful Roland Cube 30x for a couple of months and last night is the first time I tried to record from it using the output jack. It just didn't sound good. After trying a number of things for about an hour and a half it was time for bed, but I couldn't sleep. So about 1am I got up and tried something else and it got me what I wanted to hear. It was just a matter of tweaking the gain, volume, EQ, and reverb until it sounded right.

I must say the first attempts sounded so horrendously tinny that I thought "oh gosh! what am I going to record from? I can't use this!"

Cool!

What's it sound like without the recording stuff hooked up?

It sounds a lot like it does when I play the guitar through the speaker. I'm not doing anything high tech. I just want the recorded sound to sound as good as the amp through the speaker. For a while I thought I would have to get a microphone. I'm plugging the amp into a Boss BR Micro recorder and recording in MP3 mode. I like to keep a history of what I play. I had been using Audacity, a G-DEC Jr, and a laptop for previous recordings.

Oops. I mis-read your post. It sounds like listening to it through headphones, which I don't typically do. The recorder is a pass-through device of sorts.

Here's the configuration:
1) Guitar plugs into amp
2) MP3 player with jam track plugs into Aux input of amp. Volume adjusted to about 40%
3) Output jack of amp plugs into input of recorder
4) Headphones plug into output jack of recorder.

Just wait till you meet your first mixing desk.

For that matter, wait till you first try to mic a drumkit. Now that's tweakfest time...!

Cheers - C

Did you ever try to run your guitar through the COSM effects of the BR Micro direct into Audacity via a USB interface?

messing with new gear is 1/2 the fun man! Just gotta schedule your time appropriately to allow for 'mass tweakage'

Miami Mike:

No, I haven't tried that. I got the BR Micro as a replacement for Audacity because I wanted something compact that is convenient to record MP3s with. Before getting the BR Micro I did wire my G-DEC Jr into the microphone input of our laptop for recording with Audacity.

I don't really need the higher resolution data that the multi-track recording feature works with. But I do like just being able to hit the Record button and then the Play button to start recording a new MP3.

I use the BR almost every day. I like to be able to play jam loops from it, and I like to slow music down to help me learn it.

I have used the COSM models and found that they made a bad first impression on me. At first, I went through all of the available models and didn't like much of anything. But I ended up liking it quite a lot after I started tweaking a couple of models. I have two presets that I use: one for my Strat and one for my Variax. Since swapping the G-DEC for the Roland Cube, I mostly quit using the COSM models and use the Cube for everything.

What makes you ask, are you considering a BR?

Thats the truth. Half fun is the tinkering with new gear try this try that. Then you find something cool and you think WOW  check that out :!:

Fooling with all the fiddley bits till you get it right is a large part of the fun! ! :D

The speaker(s) in the amp(s) add a lot to the sound you are getting,
So I think I'd prefer miking to going direct from amp out.
A Shure M57 placed close and around 45deg off axis does nicely!
The monitors you use also hugely affect what you hear on playback.
