One of the most influential and, I think, least mentioned Strat players around.

He's got a fantastic body of work with the Shadows and has been cited as an influence by a wide variety of "Guitar Gods" (Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Stevens, Tony Iommi, Brian May, Mark Knopfler . . . ).

What do y'all think of him?

Er, have people heard of Hank in the US, then? I was somehow under the impression the Shads never broke Stateside? Well known elsewhere in the world, though. The embodiment of twang!

Legend has it his was the first Strat ever brought into the UK, by Cliff Richard returning from America in 1959 - though many question whether that is literally true. (1951 to '59 Britain had swingeing import tariffs in an attempt to get the economy going again after World War II destruction. It gave us our amplifier industry but prevented us from playing Fenders for that first vital decade...)

Cheers - C

You're kidding right? Re: Hank not being known in the States. I'm in the USA and I'll admit he is not hugely known here but players are aware of him. I'd read the legend that his was the first Strat in the UK so I might be true.

If he is really "unknown" I hope this thread gets some new people interested in him.
I play a pretty mean 'Apache' and 'Wonderful Land'

Excellent, I'm pleased to hear it. It's a great sound, for sure!

So do people in America know of Cliff Richard, too? I had the idea he'd never managed to make it there - given that you had the real Elvis and hardly needed a pale imitation. My assumption was that where Cliff failed to go the Shadows would therefore not follow either. Maybe I got it wrong.

Cliff Richard: not an export I'd be proud of...

Hank Marvin is worth checking up on though, for anyone interested to find where the next generation of British players (in the '60s) found much of their inspiration. And that's why Fiesta Red is the vital color for a Strat, this side of the pond!

Cheers - C

Yes, Hank Marvin, I have referred to him in other threads as the guy who first turned me on to the guitar in the beginning of the sixties.
A massive influence in Britain, he must have launched hundreds or thousands of careers, many becoming top guitarists in their own right.
The first group I was in [ We were all 13 years old ] in 1963, we played mostly Shadows music, as did probably all the groups over here at that time. A highly respected guitarist even now, especially among the older guys.
I have been lucky enough to see The Shadows live a few tmes and they were never a let-down, professionalism personified. Even the old stuff, Wonderful Land, Dance On, Apache etc. note for note perfect and sounding as good as ever.
Did I vote Love Him?
You bet I did.
