Almost two months ago I bought a used American Vintage 62' Reissue Strat and I just realized that the printed "Fender" on the headstock is starting to flake off. Is that normal? I bought the guitar from Guitar Center so they should have caught anything about it possibly being a fake and the stock number on the neck plate checks out. The list price of this guitar, new, is $2,000. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

I think you'll find it's all right. For the first couple of decades or more Fender put that decal on top of the lacquer, not under. So on many vintage guitars you'll see the logo is partly or mostly peeled off.

Yours is a vintage reissue, and the authentic specs include the original way of doing the decal.

The good news is that Fender will actually sell you a replacement decal if you want: get it applied and then have a coat or two of lacquer sprayed over the top to fix it forever. (Check which type of lacquer you have on that neck to use the right one.)

There is a Q&A section somewhere on this website that explains how you go about getting that replacement decal - or just contact Customer Services and they'll tell you.

In short, you take the guitar to an authorized Fender dealer to have it authenticated and then they order the correct decal for you. Fender don't want you putting genuine decals on just any old headstock...!
