Ok yeah people I know some of you not in the USA are used to higher gas prices. My sister lives in Norway and they always paid over 5 dollars a gallon also..and they have more then enough of their own gas supply....HOWEVER...they get something back for their heavy tax bill..like free health care..and schooling/college/job training. And in general the average vehicle there gets around twice the gas miliage of an American car and most are deisels. And they don't have the kind of traffic like we have here in LA..where most of our gas is burned just sitting on the highway idling.

Seems the only thing we get here in the states is the right to be unemployed..which is where I am at now. And had to sell my car for money so I guess the falling gas price don't even matter to me since I can't even afford a car anymore....

Ah there, done venting..feel much better now :)

How much of that are taxes? VAT
There are some Countries in the EU I believe have as high as 70% tax on gas.

Don't have a clue, to be honest. ...All I know is that Value added Tax of 21% is added on top of the price of the petrol and the fuel tax.

Hi Ceri :D How much of that cost is tax in the U. K. :?:

Most. Our government insists the idea is to get us out of our cars for ecological reasons. A green tax. They assure us it ain't just a revenue raising effort.

And we believe them, I'm sure.

Here in Maryland they say 14% of what ever the cost is for Federal and State Taxes so that is why ours is less then the other side of the pond. If you guys were taxed at the rate we are yours would be much less.

'Zactly. And we're not even the worst. My wife has Danish inlaws and we spend time there: in Denmark there is a 100% sales tax on cars. Which is why taxis (which are exempt) are all Mercs and everyone else drives around in tiny French cars.

(Mind you, the starting rate of income tax in the UK is 20%: I am told that in Denmark it is 65%! Wow! I've seen some of their health care and social services. It's good - but not that good!)

My wife bought an electric car to try and beat our fuel prices. Got rid of it after a month: it was a joke.

I have to put Super in mine. I had been out of the country just 10 days (returned Sun., 10/12). I couldn't believe a gallon of Super dropped .30 to $3.69 !!

Of course, when $3.69 sounds cheap I guess that means we have problems.

I live in Norway. By the way, the diesel is the same price as gas. Insane!

Hi Jommit. My late brother-in-law worked in the oil business, mostly in Norway. He spent a few years on the Troll rig - eighth wonder of the world.

I believe you have more oil per head of the population than any other country on earth, is that right? So WHY does petrol cost so much?

And while we are about it, would you or Bluestube care to explain why I had to sell my house to buy a round of drinks in a bar in Tromso? What percentage of that price is tax? Good Lord...!

Still, you have fabulous, beautiful landscape, especially in winter. And very civilised people. Can't wait to visit again...

Cheers - C

Yes but in Norway over 60% of the cost you pay are for tax. Take your tax and reduce it to what most places in the U.S. are and the cost of gas is about the same. The shocking part is that Norway is such a large oil supplier. So it all those taxes you guys have there

Yes it`s right that we produce a lot of oil. We are just almost 5 million people in Norway so i think you are right in your first comment:) The reason that it is so expensive is our greedy government and nothing else. 70% of the gaz price is tax, and our VAT is 25%. We may earn much money here in Norway, but it`s not much when you see how much the govenment take.
