After a long time in the nursing home in NJ and being on hospice care the last 2 weeks, my mom passed away at 4AM this morning. She was a holocaust survivor, having spent almost 4 years in Lodz Ghetto, then sent to Stutthof concentration camp.

She and my dad met at a DP camp and married shortly thereafter. Her stories are typical of many survivors, and she made the best of her life with my dad in NY then Florida. She went back up north a few years ago, but was not happy. Last year, she had to be moved due to a fractured pelvis, which she broke again 2 months ago. I believe that it was at that time she basically gave up. Every time I came up for a visit, she looked worse, and her dementia was at a point where she did not remember our visits. At least we had a chance to see her when we brought Michael up to school.

She was an incredible cook, and I will miss her chicken soup, her stuffed cabbage, her kugel (noodle pudding), and especially her apple cake.

No words can help and nobody knows me here yet, but still, so sorry.
Good people come to this world and good people leave it but memory of them live in our hearts. I met many people survived holochost when doing my research on it (not a school thing, it was my own research) - it's terrible experience and no one can understand that eccept that survivers. Be strong man, that's only thing i can say!

Life is about life and death and happy moments between it!

It's awful to watch loved ones decline and pass. I watched both parents take their last breath. There's no words for that kind of experience. I'm truly sorry for your loss.

I want to thank everyone for their kind words; they are not just words to me. I haven't been on the board for long, yet I always find it enjoyable and make a point to read the postings a few times a day.
When the world loses another Holocaust survivor, it always frightens me that the events will fade; that is why when I teach Holocaust history to my classes, I put in the extra effort to make it personal and tell them my parents' stories (my father survived Auschwitz), no matter how draining it is for me, and tell them it is now their obligation to pass it on so that we don't ever forget.

Again, thank you for all your prayers and thoughts.

Serge Small

Condolences on your loss. I know what it's like to lose a parent. My Dad passed away 4 years ago. Remember the good times, and the good food, she will always be in your heart.
