A few weeks back I was at my youth group's praiseband practice, I brought my 60's Gibson Melody Maker for a change. Practice was decent, we were ready for Wednesday. So after practice I sit down and watch some of the band members and one of the youth pastor's kids playing some game on the youth group's Wii.

I just sat down and played my guitar, since I don't care for video games. But then out of nowhere the youth pastor's kid walks up and KICKS the headstock of my guitar!! It didn't damage it, thankfully. I chewed his sorry butt out but he replied with an "OK" that had the tone that said "Whoop-dee-doo, I don't care, I think its fun kicking your precious guitar."

I haven't brought it back since, I bring my MiM Strat since its indestructible (I try to take care of it the best I can though). This kid is in the 5th grade, but he's home-schooled, and he wants to be in the senior-youth group (grades 7-12), so he's taking two grade-courses to be in the youth group.

What am I going to do? This kid is going to destroy every piece of gear that means so much to me!! I just can't stop thinking about that day he kicked my Gibson, I could of ripped him a new one. Just...man.

Anybody have any suggestions? Past experiences with little monsters?

Have a serious talk with his parents and ask them if they condom this type of behavior? If so they may be paying for a new guitar! Judge Judy will straighten them out!

That seems like a good solution to the problem. Although, I don't think they could replace something like this. And even if they did, it wouldn't have the same sentimental value.

Perhaps his dad should have used a condom

Don't take it where it's in danger! Simple! Good luck.

Kids need to be taught to respect other people and their property. This being a PK (preacher's kid) he might also have some issues with the church itself and how much time his dad devotes to that instead of spending it with him. Or he might be reacting against what he thinks people expect of him. I'm not excusing his behavior, only trying to understand it.

+1.
I don't know what I would do if I were you... I'd probably hang that kid from his ears!!!! It even hurts me when I accidentally give a bump on my acoustic on the wall, imagine if someone else would do that on purpose

I've discussed this issue with family member who works for social services, and apparently you ARE legally allowed to execute a piledriver on children who willfully disrespect your musical instruments.

Nice clause.

Kick the little buggers dad in HIS headstock if it happens again (now that you've talked to them). That should settle his hash, and motivate him to get his kid in line. I've got 2 of the monsters (13 and 15 years old now) and they are both properly respectful of other peoples property.

Being musicians they are also suitably appreciative of others instruments.

Absolutely you need to discuss this with his parents. First of all to attempt to get them to change his behavior. Second, if he does something like that again, you have bolstered your legal case for damages if he breaks something.

Keeping silent would be your worst course of action. But when you go to them, don't be emotional or overly accusatory. Just state the facts, plain and simple, let them know you did not appreciate it, and tell them you "thought they would want to know"...

Why don't you show the little bastard's father the value of your Melody Maker, and kindly explain to him that the next time his kid goes over and tries to kick any of your instruments, either him as a parent will be responsible or you will personally beat the devil out of the little s--$@!& okay, God will forgive you. I know I would.

got that right!

Yup, let the parents know what happened and you'll hold them responsible. You're smart not to bring that Melody Maker there again. Those headstocks snap off with a brisk wind.

Convert?

Roman Catholics do not have married priests.

The kid just sounds like a twit who may have the makings of bully.

+1 -- Yes, this is true. There have been a few known cases of "guitar-abuse homicide". Most were never even charged. For the few cases that went to trial, they were all acquitted by "sympathetic juries" (ie, twelve guitar players).
