I gave a pint of blood yesterday. My 43rd donation, that's a little over 5 gallons.

Any other blood donors out there?

Yeah, I did it once when I was 23, and never did it again. I don't know why, but I don't like the feeling of having this sharp stick going into my $@! or arm, ya know what I mean?

With the tanking economy (in the US at least) and deepening recession, charitable contributions are dropping.

Giving blood is a GREAT IDEA for still contributing without lightening the wallet.

I used to donate on a regular basis, but with all the meds I'm on and the things I have wrong with me I don't anymore.

Hi Strato, I am sad to say that at 51 years old I'm up to only 15 blood donations. I also agree with Orvilleowner. I remember seeing on tv right in the turmoil of 9-11, people lining up at blood banks to make a donation. A great way to help people. I am proud to be a blood donor.

Cheers.

As I am writing this, I recall that I started giving blood myself right after 9-11. It seems that over the years I had forgotten about the link between those two events. Thank you Stratos, good post.

I've done it about 6 times in my life. Now I feel guilty and should do it more. It's an easy way to help.

I donated all the time, when I was in the military (there was a war going on, and it went to the troops on the line.). But I can't anymore.......the would probably toss me out, because of meds that I'm on.

I'm terrified of needles, so I seriously doubt if I would ever do that!

You don't give blood through a needle, they use pipelines. Seriously you can see the hole on the tip of that needle from five feet away, and it itch all the time you have it stuck in your arm, about five minutes. But they told me that they can use one single donation for up to four different uses. Red cells, plasma etc. So while I'm sitting there, I imagine four different people receiving my blood and you know what, it doesn't hurt as much. What is a five minute itch when you want to help in a true way?

That beeing said, I know that giving blood is not for everyone. It is just one way amongst many others to help people.

Cheers.

I do. I honestly can't count how many times I've done it over the last 35 years or so and still feel really great about doing it.

I gave blood every two months for 20 years. I always felt great about myself after every donation. If I weren't on medication I would probably still be giving it.

I too used to give regularly while my health allowed it. It was a sad day when they told me they would no longer accept my donations....
