Next spring myself and a few friends will be going to california. Having never been out of the country before, (I'm canadian) i was looking to purchase a MIM telecaster to bring home as a souvenir. I was wondering if there would be any complications involved with bringing said guitar back over the border. Not being much of traveller i'd like to know.

I don't know about the taxes that might be involved in bringing one back... but with the exchange rate favoring our friends like you in the great white north, it may be a great idea!

Just sling it in the trunk of the car and drive across the border Dude.
If your flying, you'll have to declare it and maybe pay a duty fee. I'm in So Cal. If you make it to the LA area, lets jam.

A Canadian Customs phone call might help with the taxes you'll play.

MIMs are great, but they're inconsistent. Play a LOT of them, they'll all play, feel and sound a bit different. Make sure you find one that speaks to you and not just the first pretty one off the rack.

I am in NO way condoning any illegal activity, but I read an idea in a post once the struck me as pretty ingenious, I just can't find the post.

Buy the cheapest old beat up Squier that you can find, toss that in a case and bring it down here to the states with you. When you find the guitar that you want, toss the Squier (or sell it to a pawn shop) and bring the new guitar back in the case with you.

But Ziggy, Dude, what about the new-guitar-smell sniffing Customs dogs?

And the bad karma one attaches to one's guitar. And self.

And make no mistake; Customs inspectors have seen it ALL. And have seventh-senses.

'Have always told the daughters, never mess with anyone who has a badge.

Yeah, just call and ask. It might be like $30 or something, maybe less, possilby more, not huge. Just so you know though.

Like they said though, you don't want that guitar from your trip to be the "one you snuck in and scammed customs on". You want it to belong where it is.

It depends on how much the guitar is and the price of the tax trade. I don't know much about it either.... By the way, I'm Canadian too! 8)

There probably will be some sort of import tax on your way back into Canada, but you may be able to get around this if you say it was a gift, because I know someone who knows someone  who avoids paying taxes on items they have sold internationally on eBay by stating it was a gift. Now the sender didn't have to pay, I am not sure about the receiver. Also, some countries allow you to take in a certain amount of items untaxed, so maybe don't declare it as new, but as used and you bought it for whatever that amount may be. Not that I condone or encourage any sort of illegal importing or exporting
