Fender MIM Standard. Try a few at the local music store and find one that has a neck that feels good in your hands. If possible, bring someone along who can play. Then you're off to the races.

Fender Standard Telecaster.

Really, that's as inexpensive as a Fender will go. Unless you get a Squire.

Before you do, PLEASE remember this. Do not take it places in the gigbag you get with it. BUY A CASE. I made the mistake of using the gigbag and the straps broke off of my back. It fell and got a huge chip. Do me a favor, don't use the gigbag.

Good colors are: Electron Blue, Arctic White, and Tobacco Sunburst (which is what I have- very pretty)

Are you currently taking lessons? Ask your instructor his or her opinion, and possibly bring them along. That is what I did when I first started, It's nice to have that piece of mind. Don't be afraid to take your time, and play as many as you can too:) Best of luck to you and let us know how you make out an be sure to post a pic:)

Hey Bob, what's up. If you want to make a smart purchase you should wait untill Black Friday and go to GC (if you have one nearby) they will probably have a 20 percent sale which would save you 80 bucks. You then can use that money to buy a case which is a good way to keep your guitar in good condition. You should take time to check out your options and get the guitar that is right for you. If you add that 20 percent to your 400 that will get you a 500 dollar guitar. I myself am not good enough to warrant such a purchase, even a 400 dollar Fender is a bit steep for me. I may get a Squier Deluxe (normally 250... minus 20% = 200!!!!) but more than likely I wont.

The MiM models are really nice. But models with humbuckers won't get you the sound you want, so be wary of that. :)

Your best bet is a MIM Strat

A MIM Strat would be an excellent choice, however I do recommend that you to your local Music Store and try out a few guitars in your price range. Find the one that is just right for you.

Chet Feathers is giving you very good advice. Put your hands on them. even the same year, make and model may feel different and there may be some variances in the tone. Grab the one that grabs you. If you play 50 guitars, there will be a couple that will just "feel" better to your hand. Have fun.

Agree on the MIM 3-single coil Standard Stratocaster.

Also agree on going to a couple stores and trying out as many instruments as you can.

Agree with case.

Also, insist on a setup "beyond factory." A hot pro spending an hour fine-adjusting a new guitar can make it play like one twice its value. NO jive.

That said, you will likely still happily possess said MIM Standard Stratocaster when you are 40.

Best of fortune.

Hold out four a Mexican Strat. My son was 15 when he got his first electric guitar and he wanted a Squier. Since it cost a lot of money I got interested in the thought process behind his selection. Since he's been playing piano and saxophone for years I thought he should have something of good quality because I knew he would use it a lot.

I talked him out of the Squier because we were seeing too many mixed reviews of them. I made a deal with him, and we got him a Mexican Strat. This was a good idea. It's a very good instrument.

Since you are interested in rock, I suggest you take a look at the fat strat version (HSS model). It has a humbucker and my son plays that pickup almost exclusively. He likes the rock sound. It makes me think, however, that he should have considered an Epiphone Les Paul instead, which costs about the same.

For an amp, have a look at the Roland Cubes.

I started playing when I was about 13 and went on a search too for a Fender. A Standard Strat is what I found and even though inside and out, its not even the same guitar anymore, I still have it and would rather play it than any other guitars I have. The best way to find one is to find someone who once tried to play, went and bought a strat and then gave up, most of the time they will let it go way cheaper than what its worth.(I got mine for $50.) It had some issues here and there but after the years i moified, upgraded and replaced just about everything until it played better then any $1000 guitar I could find.
