Let's say you had this friend. The player uses a 15 Watt British Tube Amplifier and plays a Fender Stratocaster as an Everyday guitar. As for a the crytal clear clean Tones, the player is completely pleased. However, this friend of yours, wants to get ONE pedal which would make the Stratocaster sound more like (say...) a Singlecut guitar with two Humbuckers instead of a Fender with three singlecoils- What One pedal would you suggest?

The Metalzone pedal is a pretty versatile one for the price. You can dial in alot of different tones and shape your sound effectively. You'll need to adjust bass, mid and treble at the amp too. Don't forget the tone at the guitar too. Lastly I'd suggest using the neck or middle pickup rather than the bridge.

Some over drives are loved because they are transparent and don't colour your tone.
Some are loved because of what they add to your tone - and I think this is the type of overdrive your 'friend' is looking for.

The classic stereotype 'boost your mids and beef up your tone' would be something like a Ibanez or Maxon Tube Sceamer.
If you are on a budget, Behringer build an inexpensive copy (which even has the same revered IC445 chip.

The super cheap Danelectro Fab overdrive really darkens up your sound and bumps up the mids.

Good luck on your quest!

Just out of curiosity, does your friend use the bridge position in the strat for cleans or does he use the neck-mid more. The reason why I ask, is a single coil sized HB in the bridge position (like a SD hot rails) might get you closer to what you want for about the same price.

I've never tried it, but I did google "how to make stratocaster sound like les paul" and got several hits. For example:

personaly to change the tone of a guitar at the point nearest source id put a eq pedal directly after the guitar in my setup. You can even get clean lespaulesque sounds that way, it does take work though.

Ok, Back on point here:

My Friend just went to the local music shop and tried something suggested above...

In a word: Exactly. The Metal Zone box is just exactly what I was looking for... really does the trick. I am suprised that one box can do that. My friend is just going to have to save up about 99 Clams and get that. It means you can play a whole other range of tunes on one kick butt American guitar.

I'm going to vote for the Fulltone GT-500. Very cool od/distortion pedal. Peace. J.J.B.
