My 7 year-old son has it, and I've tried it. It's fun, but I'd rather play the real thing. No, it isn't playing a real guitar, and anyone that thinks it translates to a real guitar has absolutely no clue. However, as I told my wife when she asked me if it would help him learn, I think it helps with building rythm, to an extent. Also, as mentioned in other replies here, my son's into some decent music now. I was goofing around the other night, and he recognized Black Magic Woman, which I thought was cool. Also, he is interested in playing a real guitar. So, he now has a Squier mini that looks just like dad's Strat.

The practice mode trick sounds cool, I'll definitely try it. The only real big downside I see from GH is that my son can now idendify most of Gibson's guitars :?

Ya know, now that you mention it, my 14-year-old has a Les Paul that he keeps at my place, and an SG that he keeps at his mom's (it's also the one that he takes to lessons, and to Guitar Club at his high school on Wednesdays). Have I failed him as a father??

Guitar Hero is a F-----g joke and a insult to any true musician as far as I'm concerned. The same thing with Rock Band.

To go along with jeffo46...If someone wants to spend HOURS playing that stupid game and come away from it without learning a single chord, they must be brain dead. I would rather spend qulaity time learning a song on a real guitar than learning a song on a fake guitar any day. Not to mention that you cannot write your own music on Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

I don't care if people like the game, but my god, spending countless hours doing it and bragging to your friends about what levels you've passed? YES, correct, it is very stupid. I would be on youtube and see "Guitar Hero [enter song here] beat on expert". I don't give two craps what people beat on "expert"! Chances are, if you beat ANYTHING on expert, you wasted way too many hours of your time!

Guitar Hero is why I don't like DragonForce. This guy I work with is a huge gamer, and he only got into DragonForce because they had one of the hardest songs on GuitarHero or some crap like that, as I don't really pay attention when he gets into one of his spastic game/PC tech rants...Either way, it sort of solidified my not liking DragonForce even more

The drums with rock band may be the only thing that could be of any assistance. If nothing else it could help with timing.

I agree that the drums may help a drummer with timing. It does nothing for a guitarist. I do have to say that those games do introduce kids to music that they would not normally be exposed to. But still, spending HOURS on those games is a waste of time. Pick up a real guitar and learn real skills.

My nephew Jake is a guitar winner hero, he won all kinds of good stuff, he's 25 yr. I was teaching him a little on the guitar but when he was working for ups about 5 or 6 yr. back he stuck his nasty finger on his left hand into a bad place, it was broke & toren up so bad the DR. thought it might have to come off, his finger is kind of stiff and has more bends in it then an old country road, but last week he comes to me and askes me if I know La Grange by ZZ Top, I say's no prob. dude, a long story short, I showed he learned, he was as happy as a bearded clam in cream sauce, so yes I think guitar hero is a learning tool, I tried it once & failed major big time.
