Remember what they did to disco music, they should do the same to rap.

I voted Yes, although I do not like all rap (or what tends to be passed off as "rap" that's at the heart of this thread). True rap, such as "Rapture" by Blondie, is a derivative of scat. Scatting is more musical than rapping, as you're actually singing the words, whereas with rap you're rhythmically speaking the words to the beat of the song. Rap like what I've already mentioned, "Sabotage" by Beastie Boys and even song from DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince are what I consider to be rap. Even Run DMC's treatment of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" can be considered rap (IMO), and helped by Aerosmith actually recording the cover with Run DMC and appearing in the video. So not all rap is a rip-off of existing songs.

So while I do like true rap, that stuff that one can hear from 2 blocks away and feel from 1/2 block away I tend to loathe with a passion.

Matt

While I found that some early rap (cliched comment, I know) had some merit and artistry, that's about it. Nowadays, it seems like nothing more than who can spew out the most hatred for "society" and everyone in it over a looped drum/monotonous bass track.

I like some of the old school rap. NWA, Beasties, Sir Mix.
M&M and SnoopDog are also pretty good.
I dont listen to it vry much.

I figure it's just urban poetry set to a beat box. I know a lot of ppl hate rap, but you just have to look at it as artistic expression. A lot of ppl don't like abstract painting or free form poetry, but that doesn't make it any less valid as a form of expression.

I don't like the demeaning of other ppl and violence that rap seems to glorify, but you have to understand the brutal environment a lot of these guys grew up in. Not an excuse, but they paint a picture of their reality. Glad it ain't mine!

I'm always surprised all the drummers I know hate rap since the drum parts are so prominent.

Woah, who said yes?

I didn't. The word rap comes from the word crap.

Here's a good phrase: Music is like candy. Throw the (w)rappers away.

But... I hate modern rap, the old 80's rap which surf called scatting is fine by me.
