My son is in high school and I have a standing request to let me know about any good new music that he becomes aware of. It surprised me that so many kids today listen to what I think is termed "classic rock". I told my son that that kind of music was popular when I was his age, and that I'm really looking for something that was recently made. He says there isn't anything worth listening to. This seems highly suspicious considering the volume of music being published today.

What's the true story? Are the kids keeping all the good stuff to themselves?

Is there a web site that recommends new music that's good, and that has samples to listen to? Itunes and similar sites are too overwhelming because they contain everything. I'm looking for the cream of today's crop of music.

i graduated high school in 06' and take it from me... your son speaks the truth. All of todays music is complete and utter crap. and if there is anything good that is being produced currently, it is not on the radio. An example would be the Derek trucks Band. nobody probably knows who he is unless they went to a clapton concert in the last 5 years or so (Rythm guitar with DB2). I used to listen to all that rap crap and then senior year i was turned onto EC. and then last year i was turned onto to SRV. and from know on all i listen to is blues and classic rock and i laugh at anybody who listens to todays music and thinks that it is music.. it really is a joke. wow.. this really turned into a rant about how i hate todays music lol :P

That's very interesting. I used to rely on the radio to give me a clue about what new and good music there is, but radio no longer seems to perform that function. It certainly doesn't for me. I'm always delighted to be near a college town so I can listen to their radio station. I've gotten some good music tips while driving past such places.

unfortunatly my college radio station (Syracuse University WAER) insists on playing the worst emo crap of all time... so its satillite(Sp?) radio for me with plenty of classic rock and blues radio stations. I reccomend Sirius it has 4 or 5 classic rock stations and a bunch of jazzy and old and new blues stations. i feel there isn't a need to find anything new.. heck one of the chart toppers is just a Kid Rock cover of sweet home alabama! if you want some new good blues/CR guys i could reccomend Joe Banamassa, Derek Trucks, Doyle Brahmall 2, and basically anyone who played at any of the 04 or 07 Crossroads Guitar Festivals.
good luck on the search for todays good music.. your gonna need it!

Every time I listen to music, I go only to my 60 gig iPod. Why? Because fell off a perverbial cliff in the year 2000 or so.

I won't force him to listen to anything. He listens to stuff like Avenged Sevenfold, Avril Lavenge..... You know, punk/rock. Rock I don't mind, but punk? He evens likes rap! Oh my god, that stuff kills me, especially for someone who plays LOTS of blues music. Sometimes he listening to some to music pretty loudly, and then I turn on SRV even louder! Then he goes louder, then I go louder.......... Then finally I kick him in his pants (just joking)!!!

I find the kids around here listen to modern stuff. When it comes to playing though they dig the 70's and 80's classic rock.

A lot of the stuff I listen to, is not on the radio. I think you have to search out artists at times........and they're often much better than whats on commercial radio. I often find new artists all the time by going to music festivals.

If I could only own one CD, it would have to be Derek Trucks "Out of the Madness." It's got something for everyone, electric blues, delta slide, jazz, etc. Check it out.

The kids around here seem to like classic rock.

My wife is a piano/guitar teacher and sometimes the kids will lend her some of the newer stuff. It's OK I guess.

I hate thinking I'm stuck in "the good ol' days", but I've listened to Perfect Circle, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, ColdPlay. Interpol, Velvet Revolver and it just sounds limp and warmed over. Bands seemed so focused on a particular genre now and tied into such narrow bandwidth. Bands used to be a lot more exploratory. I don't know if this is because of marketing or the musicians skill level or whether they are so focused on "this is *our* sound/style" outlook.

But it's always kind of been this way - even when I was a kid I'd $@!&* about how much crap there was out there (Yummy Yummy, Sugar Sugar) -- now it doesn't sound so bad hearing it today! As with everything, you have to sift thru a lot of dirt to find diamonds. Just keep your ears open and go by what the younger musicians are listening to.

I like what the FooFoghters are doing, but I wish Grohl was on drums. I understand it's hard to front a band being glued down sitting in the back -- but he is such a crusher drummer!! The Raconteurs are good fun. But it's pretty much like music kinda stopped being interesting/fun in the early 90s. But mebbe that's just me... :/

story: I caught one of my wife's students looking through my CDs.
I said I don't have anything new - just a bunch of old man rock.
He says "That's what I like!"
