I haven't noticed that.

 You'd better look around bro before you say that again...check out the other threads in this forum alone...that's all I'll say for now because some of your buds are doin' it too...

I haven't read too much bashing of the fretboard wizards, but if you say it's happening I'll believe you.

I appreciate technical playing, but only if it retains musicality. YJM is an excellent example of this. I think Satriani is also very musical in his approach to shredding a fretboard. Steve Vai also comes to mind, though I find him less musical than the aforementioned YJM and Satch.

What I tend to dislike is the guys who think that just doing stuff fast is impressive. Those are the players I would like to hear S L O W down alittle and really show what they can do to write/play something that sounds good in addition to being difficult to play.

Okay, I'm probably to blame here!!!

I'm always pointing my finger and laughing at hairy-speed-death-metal-thousand note a minute - myximylodian 7th scale playing, chug - chug - chug type guitarists.

And why not. They should wash their jeans and listen to some Richard Hawley.

Shreddin, you can make one feel kinda sad. 'Bout your proclaimed "standards" for having an opinion here in the Lounge. Maybe re-think what wou e-said?

Personally....

'Do not write music (there's plenty out there; do write books however.)

'Do not play metal.

'Do not record.

O.K. for the last time!!! I was directing that at a group of 3 to 4 people that kept talking about their "god-given" abilities and how everything else sucks, yet they have no audio or anything up anywhere to back up their proclaimed "holyness". NONE of the people that posted here were any part of the original 3 or 4 and everyone took everything out of context. Sorry that people don't seem to read everything, but rather just get bits and pieces and within 2 or 3 posts, everything became something that it wasn't supposed to be in the first place! I have no standards for a great forum that this is for anyone to post or have an opinion! For crying out loud, that's not what I meant! This is the last time that I'll try to explain this. Remember that I'm the guy that spent countless hours on this forum trying to help out wiiman8 and others learn scales, modes, how to stay in key, ect., ect. so don't accuse me of being "superior" to anyone because I'm just here to help and learn some things that I don't know yet or never would've thought of on my own.

Like I said in a previous post on this thread...It'd be nice to get to know people here more and their stories about what actually sparked them into playing music and where they want to go with it. I can guarantee that if we all were to meet, we'd jam the heck out, drink some beer, smoke some green  , jam the heck out some more, and then repeat.

I really am sorry and somewhat disheartened that everyone took what I was really trying to get at the wrong way, but like Crying Strat said...I'm not very good at explaining things sometimes. Damn! Imagine how bad it would've been if I changed my major in college to English rather than staying in Performing Arts Classical Guitar...See it could've been worse  .

IAN: I totally know that you're joking brother, that's why I wrote the reply the way that I did. Believe me when I tell you this...I have no more fun ripping on someone other than myself...True story.

Okay, I'll bite. Started playing electric guitar in '92 (roughly) after growing up in an orchestra of all places playing violin. After getting kicked out for playing the violin like a guitar I figured that's the way I should go. First guitar was a strat-like Korean Epiphone. I was in a high school band called Inner City Farm, where we performed all original music, basically rock and roll. Took some lessons early on, but mostly learn by ear, and crappy tab. I really wish there was a better (central) place to get good tab, and not some of the nonsense I've found. Now I finally have a Strat, and have found myself wanting to learn some older Blues. Think Freddie King, Jeff Healey, Muddy Waters, etc. I play in my little extra bedroom after work, and may get good enough one day to play in front of people again, because really, that was probably the most fun I've ever had in my life. Thanks for letting me share, and thanks for everyone here!

Senderkik: Awesome story bro! I've always wanted to play the violin and someday soon I will actually teach myself, but growing up in an orchestra? That's freakin' cool man! Getting kicked out because you played it like a guitar is even better  . The only part that I disagree with is the whole thing about not being good enough to play in front of people yet. Dude! Obviously you're good enough or you wouldn't have done it back in school. Even though you may have taken a break from it for a while, that break may have actually made you a better player. Now that you're a little older you have a different perspective on things now than you did then and like I always say..."Age = Experience + Knowledge." I say just get the heck out there and rock the hell out brother! Just like you, that's also the most fun that I've ever had in my life as well and I really can't think of any other musician that would say otherwise. Thank you so much for sharing and now we all know where you're coming from which is the coolest thing about this forum...making friends and hopefully someday we can all get together and jam out...(everything I said in the earlier post: yeah even the green part  ). ROCK ON my friend!

Thanks man. You are right, I can play, it's just trying to find people to play with. I've tried Craigslist and open mic nights. I've had some success finding a few folks, but need to try again. And I'm down with the    shrubbery. Later.
