I see ads for Guitars that look like they've been modified to have LEDs in the neck, presumably to prompt the student to finger a certain fret. Call me old fashioned, but I don't see the value.

What are these things and what is their supposed benefit?

That's exactly right Rudy. The LED's light up and show the student whre to place their fingers. The idea is that it's easier to learn. I'd think they would become reliant on the lights.

Dunno though, I've never tried one

Thinking here, it'd be a pain to have to look for each note and then fret it.

The Fretlight might actually have some educational value, as opposed to this handy device:

Image

"Play Your Favorite Guitar Songs in ONE Hour With Just ONE Finger.
Patented E-Z Chord device attaches to any guitar in just 5 minutes and gives you instant success. E-Z Chord replaces difficult finger moves with just four numbered buttons. All you have to do to change chords is push buttons at the right time. Learn to play every type of music: Country, blues, gospel, bluegrass, rock, rockabilly and more. You receive the E-Z Chord device and all the support you need with a 60-minute DVD that serves as your step-by-step guide. A 24-page songbook teaches you old favorites by telling you when to push the buttons."

And here I am, rehearsing and practicing like a sucker!

I couldn't make this up if I tried. It's yours for just $41.98 from the SkyMall catalog at http://www.skymall.com/shopping/detail.htm?pid=102176391.

Fretlights are sometimes used on the fretboard insted of fret markings because thy look cooler (sometimes have no educational value at all).
