Let me start out by stating that this is NOT a slam on the wazoo, highly technical players out there. Most of us have aspired to that level and know it's hard as heck to achieve.

But if I have to sit and listen to one more of them whine about how their 'god like' abilities are not appreciated by the average joe in the audience I may just beat them with a guitar stand.

Do they not get it? Playing stuff of high technical proficiency usually only impresses other guitarists. The average (usually buzzed) audience member could care less how hard something is to play as long as it sounds good.

ARRRRGH! sorry just a pet peeve I had to vent.
Does anyone else get this?

Quite right. Some of the best songs are just two or three chords.

All that technical fiddling isn't music - it's just technical fiddling!

I wouldn't call it a pet peeve of mine, but I can certainly relate to that point. I find lengthy guitar instrumentals played fast to be fatiguing to listen to. About five minutes is plenty.

I tried listening to Malmsteen and to Vai and didn't like to listen to them because of the fatigue factor.

Related to this, I found that the instrumental album Chester and Lester by Les Paul and Chet Atkins to be very pleasant. Instead of making it all instrumental they included little verbal jibes between Paul and Atkins, or the recording engineer reminding them that the red light means that they are being recorded. It's the only guitar instrumental that I can listen to and enjoy from beginning to end. Warning to the unititiated: It's not rock music.

yup I hear a lot of what I call "chunka chunka blurrrrrp" guitar players at the stores. Once in a while one guy plays so good that it is wonderful to listen to. Then I stick around and after awhile chat. :D

Well I for one have always realized that to be true so it doesn't bother me in the least if the average joe doesn't get it. I primarily play for other musicians, so if they are diggin' it, then I'm happy. And you're also right about 3 or 4 chord songs being more popular because they usually have a certain feel to them. Some of the easiest stuff that I write also gets the most compliments from the average listener and the stuff that's damn near impossible to play just gets looked over like "wow that's great, but I really don't get it." It's all in the TARGETED audience.

But the comment about technical fiddling isn't music  ...I suppose that anything that Paganini, J.S. Bach, Chopin, ect. wrote wasn't music then...

Naahh! we all know that music wasn't invented until the 50's. Before that it was just noise.

Yngwie is very fatiguing to me, as well -- too much "look what I can do" and not enough emotion in his playing for me. However, I would not put Steve Vai in that category. Vai, along with Extreme's Nuno Bettencourt, plays with much more soul and is significantly more musical to my ears.

Just my opinion -- I am not an Yngwie hater. I have a few of his albums and infinite respect to what he can do.

Not sure if you're referring to soloing or songs. Some players can make one or two notes sound much bigger by the way they play them (trill, hammer-on, bend, etc..) and songs can go any way, simple or complex, but I always look for a good hook or something that defines the tune.

How do y'all feel about Satriani? I prefer his playing to Vai's (but Steve is a really talented guy and I like his stuff too).

I loved the comment about the chunka chunka players in an earlier post. It's amazing how may are out there, especially in the "detuning" crowd.

my God given abilities is the foretitude He gave me to pick up my guitar & learn, I am an average man with better then average guitar skills, a lot of your guitar skills comes from your guitar teachers and how much you want to apply yourself to your lessons, in no way should a person think he is better then the person standing next to him even if he or she is, we all know there are different skill levels and what level we're at , if your level is better then the person next to you reach out and help the person next to you, you'll both be the better for it , I really pitty those people who think their poop don't stink.

Preach it Brother Sparks!
Excellent point my man, we were all somewhere else before we got where we are, and we got a bit to go til we get where we're going. I think that as long as someone is sincerely playing and enjoying it, that is all that matters.

I'd also rather hear someone throw down a heartfelt gut busting pentatonic based solo than some cheesebrain do finger exercises at mach two (but that's just me)

If they know they can play 'that well,' why do they even need their egos masturbated by listeners?

And in the final thout. if y' wanna flash your pearls, don't go to the swine pen.

I love me some Satch! A truly great guitarist, with technical mastery of his instrument, and a blast to listen to. Some of his songs tend to sound similar, but I love 'em just the same.

I like Satriani a lot. I have two of his albums, and the more recent of the two is the better one. It's the one with "You are my world" on it. The other is "Surfing with the Alien", which is very fine too.
