I'm memorizing the fretboard now (as part of the learning odyssey), and it's a combination of rote memorization, rearranging simple tunes and playing them in different ways (like playing it all on one string only), and drills like "play all the As on the fretboard". I'm making progress, but it's a lot to learn.

Can you recommend any other tips that will keep these drills fresh and interesting?

Thanks!

Memorizing notes in which tuning. :)
Different tuning notes move accordingly.

For standard tuning, keep on with the practice drills is about it.

It might sound crazy, but I learned to associate colors with different scales and notes in certain keys.

In some ways like piano keys. Sharps would be bright, flats dark, and major root notes would be colorful. I said it was crazy, but it worked for me.

Do like they teach at GIT. You need to visualize things, in your head, very detailed, before you play it. If you noodle on the neck first, you'll stumble all over the place since it's not in your head, or worse - you'll learn it wrong.

Play a certain pattern. Then close your eyes for two minutes and visualize it, hear it, feel in in your hands. Until it's 100% in your head. THEN pick up your guitar and play it.

This helps when learning new songs as well. If it's not in your head, your hands will be all over the place trying to find it.

DGonz:

Thanks! That's good advice.

Duh! Visualization is so important to other physical activities I should have thought of that one myself.

I think I'll take what you wrote and hang it up where I can see it when I play.
