Found a good book at the library yesterday: Electric Guitars and Basses by George Gruhn. It's a pictorial history of electric guitars up to about 1994 when the book was published. It explains some of the differences between the different popular models within the various product lines, like the difference between a Gibson ES335 and ES355, for example. The focus is decidedly on vintage guitars as major companies like Ibanez are not even mentioned. I believe it was written mostly with the collector in mind. In any case, it's nicely done and I recommend you try to find it at your library too.

Agree.

It's on the shelves of music and guitar-oriented stuff at home.

Gruhn is a master guitar guy. I check out his site all the time. If your into vintage, that's the place to look.

The shop, Gruhn Guitars, here in Nashville, is a sight to behold. The first time I ever set foot in it I had to put both hands in my pockets like a little kid because I was afraid I would break something.....

Yeah, and when you go in, make sure you bring your checkbook and/or credit cards! Oh, a second mortgage on the house wouldn't hurt either! :)

It's really worth a trip to Nashville if you can get there. We passed through it this past summer and stopped at on of the guitar shops. It's great to see what there is in a highly competitive market like the Music City. We went to Rock Block. Nice place and lots of good books and learning materials.

Gruhn's in Nashville. Manny's in New York. Wildwood in Louisville, Co. Great stores to visit.

George writes an occasional column in Premier Guitar Magazine which is always interesting, imo.

This month's article :
