Anybody know what exactly guitar/bass string lubricant (specifically the Dunlop brand) is made out of? Smells a little like trumpet valve oil.

Anyone got any home recipes?

I like the Dunlop string cleaner//lube, but hard to get where I live. If it's just trumpet oil, I'll go with that. Thanks!

PS- I heard that you shouldn't use silicone based lubes, as they are bad for the finish or something. Is that true?

I have the Dunlop 65 but also have FastFret. I vastly prefer Fastfret because of the easy to use applicator and cloth. It works great and I will keep using it for as long as its available. I don't like the Dunlop nearly as much because it's more difficult to work with.

I tried the Fast Fret, but it felt like it got gritty and tacky for my right hand fingers. I play bass, and sometimes when I would pluck, my finger tip would get stuck on the string, and I couldn't swing through. Messed me up a bit when playing some passages live.

I only had that happen to me once since I started with the Dunlop, so that seems to be working the best so far. The only other thing I can readily get my hands on is the spray stuff, but I hear it has silicone and messes up the finish or something.

I use spray on cooking oil. It's essentially free for me since it is already in the Kitchen cabinet..but yeah..at one time someone paid for it.

Anyhow the type is virgin olive oil..not pam but some organic brand. Pam may work as well. The stuff makes fretboards really fast and easier to play. I haven't noticed a bad smell or any residue on my hands from it..spray on..wipe down.

I also noticed it makes dull rosewood fretborads shine like new. However I also do not know if using this product will have any adverse effects in the future..but so far it's been working like a charm for me.

I used to use after shave because it has alcohol in it which is great for cutting grease and grime out of strings.
It also contains a light lubricant which kept strings feeling slinky.
Extra benefit was my bass case smelled great!

Don't use anything anymore. Just a string rag.

I like using after-shave. It cuts the grease and works well. I would also recommend FastFret, becuase it keeps the string feeling slinky. Works good on my Fender '62 Tele becuase it has .12 gauge strings on it, and there is a lot of dirt and grime that gets on the thicker strings becasue there is more surface erea to them.

:D Chow!
