I am in a situation now where I am pretty much homeless, carless and pennyless..all because I will not "compromise" or "sell my soul".

Do I recommend you do the same?

Tough call bro.

However I recently moved to LA and there actually is a music scene here..however scary. So I do have time for auditions..which I do often. But I find I am audtioning them..not the other way around. So I may need to compromise or get a day job..I guess as long as I didn't hate the music, I could bare with playing with less skilled musicians..of course as long as it paid.

There's also the angle that they might get better. I started off in the mid 60s and outside of one group of kids around town who all grew up together, not many musicians available for the rest of us. We started with me on guitar (lessons and hours of practice a day), my friend and drummer (ditto on skills and training) and a singer (natural voice, decent "moves" for stage).

We went through I don't know how many bass players, rhythm guitars, etc. but it seemed that all the "good" ones were all in the same social set and all went to the "other" high school in town. (Yep, this is a variant of "all the good ones are taken.")

So finally in desperation, we decided to stick with the first two guys who came along who could at least play and were willing to work. If they'd practice their tails off, we'd teach them. And that's exactly what happened ... we brought them up to where we were. The interesting side effect is that people around town said we had a lot more cohesive and unique sound than the "big names."

Sure ... makes sense ... the bass player and other guitarist (and backup singer) worked hard to master our level and when they got there, they pretty much sounded like us. We also stuck together for over 5 years, which is pretty good for a rock band..

Anyway, if you think these guys have the ability and might respond to you as the target to shoot for, it could work out very well..

Wow! You dudes ABSOLUTELY RULE!!! Thank you soooooo much for all of the great advice! Looks like I should answer some questions though...

1. Money: I have a fairly decent job as the VP of Crowe's Sales, Inc. (family business) and we produce custom machines for GAF/ELK, Lord Corp., GE, General Chemical, ect. as well as overhead cranes, conveyor systems, commercial buildings, ect. (all custom). I'm also a certified welder; 6G in pipe and "unlimited" in Bridge & Iron. Extra money never hurts though. Believe me I'm not rich or even close and my family and I live week to week so money is sort of an issue.

2. Getting out there: Yeah it's great to be on the stage, but it's not like I didn't live that way for about 10 years of my life, but it wasn't around here I suppose. Either way that's always the point in the end is to get on that stage and hope that what you play is making the audience happy and want to drink more beer (=more money a lot of the time). You want to talk about awkward? Here's a College performing arts story: Try sitting in front of better than 3,000 people in a REALLY nice theater all by yourself on stage (wearing a three piece suit  ) playing stuff like "Sonata in A Minor" by Bach on your classical guitar just knowing that if you miss even one note that the people there are going to notice. Now that's what I call putting yourself out there...

3. Too good?: Not the point at all. In this business I truly believe that there's something to be learned by and from EVERYONE that partakes in it's excellence. No one person is necessarily better than another just because they think that their style is "superior", that would be absurd. I just happen to be the type of musician that likes a challenge and I actually welcome them every time that I play. Not that the easier to play stuff isn't fun some times, it's just that I like to be challenged with stuff that's harder for me to play. It doesn't make me any better than anyone else if they don't get it because I'm sure that there's something that they could show me as well.

4. Decision time: I think that ZOD is sitting on my shoulder  . There's definetly something there that keeps telling me that "this isn't your gig dude." They've contacted me again through myspace and said that they'd be calling me "soon." Meanwhile I was just jammin' in my studio on the piano for a while and came up with a beautiful melody, so I picked up my Straight Six Strat (remember I "metalized" it) and started to play the same thing on it. Then the rhythm that goes underneath came to me, and after that, the rhythm and two part arpeggiated harmony which methodically climbs back to the main melody and riff and even a breakdown part out of nowhere. Just like that in about 15 minutes another idea was born and I even have the drums in my head, but it'll probably take me 2 days with the drum program to even get it close to what I want it to be. If I had the other people to contribute and be able to keep up it would make the whole process a lot faster and easier on me as the writer. I don't mind writing all of the parts, but it's hard for me to convey what I'm after to the drummer because that's the only instrument that I don't play in this particular scenario. This type of frustration also leads me to make the decision to play with the "cover" band (I hate playing other people's stuff though as it's much harder to create something new) just to get that old "fix" again if you know what I mean.

Thanks again for all of your advice and I've read and appreciated every single post so you dudes ARE FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!

Nick will appreciate this one...If I do it then I'd have to play some tunes from those 80's sell-out guitarists  and that would suck...Cause we don't brother!!!

I'll keep you guys posted as to what happens and if I join, then I'll post a link to their page. The name of the band is "Chrome" and they're obviously a biker band, but I'm a biker too so it's all good.

ROCK ON MY FRIENDS...ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!

Reading between the lines here, it seems you are going to pitch in with these guys and if you do, can I ask what may be an obvious question.
Have you submited your compositions to a publisher?
If not, then why not? If they approve your music/compositions and consider you to have outstanding talent, they may want to help in extremely favourable ways.
By that I mean recording your material, they will offer a percentage deal, pay for the recording and provide musicians well capable of handling anything you place before them, including yourself of course, pitch the product out there and perhaps put you on the road with a band.
I have worked for a publisher for years, not writing rock music, something else [ Library music actually ] and I draw royalties from all around the world.
So in conclusion my last suggestion is.
Join this band and submit your compositions to publishers and do not be dis-appointed by rejection slips, because you will get plenty. Keep at it and remember something I always told myself.
They can send a thousand no's, it only needs one yes.
Whatever you do ' Good Luck ' I wish you all the best.

Nothing Eddie, I've been busy, that's all. I just got a new Fender Jeff Beck Strat and I've been working on it. Re-setting etc. Why the hell do they set them with whammies poking 6 inches in the air , got to have fingers like eagles claws to play the factory set-ups. I've been working on music as well.
Have you been missing me Eddie? you're going to have people talking.
Keep it rockin' man.
