"Guitar Acquisition Syndrome".

I see similar things among gun afficianados. Some guys like to trade guns, try them out. Learn them for a while, and then sell it and try something different. Other guys like to own a different gun or two for each niche (paper targets, steel targets, big game hunting, small game hunting, etc.). Some guys like to collect a particular kind of gun, like Winchester model 94 rifles. A few will buy a new gun and never even fire it.

Is that the way it works with GAS? Different motivations for different people, or do most people with GAS just want to have a large guitar collection?

I think it varies pretty wildly from person to person. Obviously, most people could get away with having a small number, nobody really needs 20 electric guitars and a couple basses, and some more acoustics on top of that. (I use those numbers because that's what I have.) Much less hundreds.

For me it's just fun to have a batch. Some people like to get all Strats or LP's or whatever, but I like to have different things. For example, although I have 3 Teles, one is a regular S-S-S, another is a Fat Tele with a neckbucker and 5-way switching, the third has a mini-humbucker in the neck and 3-way switching. They pretty much all get played, I make a point of trying to rotate through them in practices and at shows.

Sometimes hearing someone else playing some gear that you like the sound of.

I thought it was "gear aquisition syndrome?" :?

Gear or guitar, I've seen both. Gear is obviously more encompassing, so you can include amps, effects, etc.

I once had a rather large collection of guns. But after years of doing that, I realized that I could only (and did) use a few of them. I ended up selling most of the guns, and now only have a few.

I would imagine that it would be the same when it comes to guitars. I have four guitars right now, and I'm happy with those. I think if I were to start collecting guitars, I'd soon run out of space to store them. And.....I'd probably end up selling them off, like I did the guns.

I buy something when I am looking for a sound. Most of the time I go to the local music store and check an instrument for a few minutes and then put it away if it not what I am looking for. A vast majority of the time i don't buy anything. (I have a good collection of free picks from that place.) But sometimes the price of something and the sound are right then I buy.
Once in awhile I sell the stuff that I no longer play. So the "inventory" here moves up and down.

For me it's mostly the quest for different tones.

Fulfilling a long-standing list dreamed of as a teenager...

...together with a few impossible-then, available-now pieces like variax guitar and Cyber-Twin amp.

Or in my case, the "guest bedroom." Since I started collecting, the bed had to go, then the computer was relegated to one small corner. The end result is that no guest has ever stayed in there. Instead, I end up camping out on my day bed (aka the Practice Couch), while the guests stay in my room.

But naturally I have a couple in the living room too and yes, there's even one in my bedroom. Well hey, I'm not a total addict though -- not a single guitar in the kitchen. Nope, not a one ... yet :D

(Come to think of it, I haven't taken to playing in the bathroom yet either. Hmmm ... I have a friend with one of those "shower radios" so maybe it's time for the world's first shower amp!)

It's the variety!

So many models
So many finishes
So many woods
So many pick up combinations
Rosewood or maple necks
hard tail or vibrato

Hmmm maybe it's time to head down to Guitar Center after work.

Also, if you have kids, you can teach them to play and let them borrow your beaters. My daughter has my P-bass in her room and my son has a Tele in his room. 2 acoustics (guitar and banjo) are in the living room, a Strat is in the corner by the fireplace in the family room, a bunch are under my bed, and a couple more are under the stairs.

The rest are at work.
