Why do people pay silly money to have their guitar made to look like its been played for years.
Personally i really dont like relic guitars as i think they look ugly as hell, sure some people like the look but i find it horrible. just play the guitar for years if thats what you want it to look like and treat it like s**t and you'll have it looking like a relic in no time.
Anyone else feel the same way as me

We've had this one a million times before, if a relic guitar bugs you, look away, after all music is about SOUND!

If you have the time to constantly look at your guitar while playing you simply aren't focused enough on the music, I never think about a guitar being new, old or relic'ed, i think about the feeling and I focus on what my next step is gonna be, not how my guitar looks
Try it, it actually works pretty well....

NO OFFENSE MEANT!!!!!

What I'm trying to say is that you don't pass on a beautiful redhead just because you prefer blondes

Just a note, I bought my relic used for about the price of an new Fender am. deluxe or LP standard so I haven't taken the extra price for relics into consideration when i wrote the above post

I was initially stumped by the popularity of relics, but at last figured out that some people like the look and the feel of them. That explained it all.

I like to keep my guitars looking like new for as long as possible. I give them a complete wipe down, after every time I play. But then...I'm a neat nut like that with my things.

Personally I try and keep my guitars looking as nice as I can. I don't like seeing guitars that look like a POS. The worst I've seen so far was Willy Nelsons guitar that I saw in the Crossroads 2007 DVD.
I realize that my opinion may be in the minority however, To each their own. 8)

I wouldn't spend the money to buy a relic'ed model, but have no objection to them as far as that goes. This may back to the days when I started (mid 1960s) -- quite a few other kids got into it as well and there soon seemed to be an "upstairs/downstairs" look to the guitars around town.

The kids whose parents had $$$ were the ones with the new Les Pauls and expensive stacks. Maybe their parents' connections could even buy them a few gigs. The rest of us had what we could afford or get second hand.

Audiences have a funny habit of coming back to hear the people who can play though. I've never heard anyone say, "Well, Joe over there can't play for beans and he's out of tune but hey ... his folks are wealthy and he has a real $2,500 guitar so bring on more of it."

So I echo the sentiment so far: it's not what it looks like, but how it sounds in the hands of the person playing it.

Play it enough and it will "relic itself" for you anyway. My first was a 1964 Mustang (and Ampeg Jet) I bought from my uncle in 1967. It was pretty mint then and remained that way for quite a while. But today (I still have it), it, like me, is old, experienced, cracked wrinkled and worn. A relic playing a relic ... but it sounds even sweeter than it did 40 years ago!

I like using fancy stuff like Fast-Fret and Fender Polish. I like relic or new! Have 40 guit's all together! Quite a couple of times to decide what I like and what I don't like, right? Well, some people like relic guitars because of there short action and old looks, and also because of how they feel. Just other people and their opinions. I used to be the same way! You don't have to listen to other people and what they think of your opinions, it's your guitar and you're paying for it, so it's your decision. :)

I don't have anything against a relic guitar. The ones from Fender have a unique feel. That said, I try to keep my guitars in the best condition I can. If I should bump or scratch one it won't be the end of the world, and If I keep them in good condition they will be worth more than one that I beat up.

Actually, that is not true. I saw a 1969 Fender Tele and it was in mint condition for 2900$, and then I saw a 1968 Strat for 9000$. So would you start beating up your guitars? NO! It's your money, use it the way you want! :D

You're comparing apples to oranges. What I'm saying is that my 2004 American Strat or my 2007 American Strat will very likly be worth more by keeping them in good shape. Try to take a beat up Strat and a good condition Strat of the same make and model to a guitar shop and see which one they will pay the most for. I'm not saying that a relic guitar could never be worth alot of money. I'm just saying that my plain Jane, every day guitars will be worth more by taking proper care.

Hello All,

Guitars and blue jeans are the only,
factory reliced products that come to mind.

Anybody buying anything else reliced?

Cheers.

"Relicing" is one of the greatest marketing gimmicks in the book (next to taking your moms uncool station wagon, putting bigger tires on it and calling it an SUV).

Fender takes bodies that get accidentally "dinged" during production, trashes them a little more in strategic locations and then claims that they meant to do it all the long. I can almost hear the marketing wizards now "Hey guys dig this it's cool, it ain't damaged . . it's relic'd". And people acutally pay for it. GENIUS!

hey I got a "relic'd" car in my driveway. Anyone looking to buy?

Relics are like when stonewashed jeans first came out. If done well, its not bad, if not done well, it looks like crap....

As far as the debate on why or why not, I just look at relics the same way Jeff Jarrett described wrestling:
"For those who believe, no explanation is necessary, for those who don't believe, no explanation will ever do."
