New, because as the late, great Roy Buchanon said something to the effect of, the new stuff is just as good or better than the old stuff...

Yeah, but it is the sound of the instrument and the feel of the instrument that counts! :)

Sweet-playing vintage instruments are definitely awesome. But not all vintage stuff is sweet playing. Compared with yesteryear, the quality of today's instruments is staggeringly better (IMO) -- especially for Fender. Today, even the upper-tier Squier stuff is really good across the board. But "back in the day" you really had to play the instrument you were buying to not get a lemon...

Well that has nothing to do with new or vintage, or which one we prefer. There's lots of vintage stuff out there that feels and sounds like crap, just like there are lots of new guitars out there that feel and sound like crap as well. Just because its vintage doesn't mean it will sound good, and just because its new doesn't mean it will sound like crap.

I totally agree! Crappy vintage instruments are really bad. Imagine if some made a First-Act guitar vintage? I just got a chill down my back What did you vote for?

I guess so, but I'd much rather see someone with some lame looking gear playing the hell out of it, than someone with "cool" looking gear who can't play at all. Its music, not a fashion show, and someone may be the coolest looking guitarist in the world, but none of that matters if they can't play, but thats just my opinion, as I am sure there are many people out there who would like to see someone with several thousands of dollars of vintage, and/or cool looking, gear just stand there and barely play "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow"...

I prefer new guys. i know vintage will have nostalgia and maybe even romance attached to it, but for the same reason I would buy a new car instead of something from the 60's, technology advances.
And don't forget todays new is tomorrows vintage.

This is a hard one because there have always been high quaility and great intruments made but there are more made today then in the past. Plus I think now you can get quality at a good price were as in the past the cost of a new instrument was expensive compard to income of many. Based on just those quick thoughts I voted new :)

I generally prefer new because then I have control over breaking them in. It's the same when I buy cars ... sure, I could try 1,000 cars until I find one that had been driven and (ab)used by someone just like myself, but it's easier in the end to buy new.

Like a vintage car, if I really did find a vintage guitar that was very special (not just "old"), I'd be relucant to use it much. On that basis, I'd rather have a new model that I can use at will and not worry much about.

Finally, as several others have pointed out (again as with cars), the general affordable class guitars today are in general better made than comparable ones of a generation ago.
