I'd much rather have people that don't know and randomly pick a candidate stay home and NOT vote.

Too many women are thinking only "Sarah Palin is a girl. That's great, I want to vote for her so we girls can stick together" without know all that comes with the whole McCain/Palin Ticket, the policies, how putting those two in office will affect not only this country but the world, how we'll be looked at by other countries, etc. Too many people also think "Democrat = people, Republican = business" and have no clue otherwise. Those people do NOT need to vote blindly.

If you like either, really know their issues, how it will affect everything, agree with their policies and how they're going to fix the economy and that cluster-f$#%! over in Iraq, then vote for either one, as long as you understand that and truly believe in it. Otherwise, please do not spread your ignorance and potentially ruin our country!

I disagree with your ... disagreement.

I think that the basic problem with our politics is that the politicians aren't talking about the things that most of us care about. The only way to change that is for everyone to vote.

I respectfully beg to differ. One often sees the business vs. people argument. The reality is that both parties are quite on alike except in two regards:
Both parties understand and apply spending for various social programs and other government initiatives. Both Democrats and Republicans have mastered the spending part. The difference is that Republicans understand that the money has to come from somewhere, and that national prosperity and social safety nets can only be had if business prospers.

The second difference is relatively new and it is that the Republicans seem to acknowledge that nations need to defend themselves, and that sometimes fighting results.

I don't care who you vote for as long as you base your vote on the actual issues and not just because your family traditionally votes this way or that way. Voting is not family tradition, in fact, it was family tradition in a sense, or monarchies, that made the forefathers of this country come up with allowing people to vote for who they choose, instead of someone being chosen just cause of bloodlines. So vote for who YOU feel is the best candidate based on issues, and not because your family usually sides one way or another or just cause you may think someone is attractive

I don't understand how that happens. There are pleny of ways to get information on candidates before casting your ballot and anyone who argues they "don't have the time" or whatever is just being lazy. My 2 cents on that one.

Because most people only know what they see on TV - which bears no relation whatsoever to reality. Anybody who thinks they are getting anything resembling the true pictures of the issues or the candidates from TV, newspapers, or news magazines is deluded.

I agree with your statement, I just don't agree with people voting in that manner.

Look at it this way... which do you spend more time:

 researching the next bit of musical gear that you want to purchase

or

 researching who you are choosing to represent you in government

If you have spent more time deciding on what strings to buy than you have spent in picking our government, then you probably aren't going to make a wise, well informed decision... and you should probably stay away from the polls. Eenie Meenie Minie Moe is not the way to go.

I encourage every one to cast their INFORMED ballots.

I agree I always Vote but I am always informed on things before hand. I cant believe how many just vote party and dont have a clue. And now with all the early voter stuff going on its NUTS! Vote early vote often, talk about fraud theres places in Balt. that have more votes cast then regesterd voters and they do nothing about it. I was and election Judge one year never again you not alowed to ask for proof of ID and if the persons name cant be found on the role there allow to vote with a provistional ballot or if there voting and dont live in the community they can do that as well. The big joke here is you do not have to be a U.S. Citizen to vote here. This state has been run by one party for over 50 years and they do what ever they want :!: I am one of the ones who vote for whom I think is best not who my party says I should or the person who can read the best speaches writen for them.

Ah, politics... you start disagreeing about disagreements and you don't even realize that you're on the same side.

Bluesgrass:

I disagree with your disagreement of my disagreement, and therefore re-disagree. The sad voting patterns are pretty well understood. Most eligible voters don't vote, and those that do are informed by sound bites and misinformation. That's how we get imbeciles like McCain and Obama in public office. These two are horrible candidates.

The old adage that the people get the government they deserve is true.

What we really need to do is a superset of your advice:
1) Pick a few public issues you are passionate about and follow them by getting familiar with the true facts about them.
2) Vote
3) Hold elected officials accountable by calling and mailing their offices.

It really doesn't take much effort and a little public involvement goes a long way. Really, just a couple of hours a month is plenty.

I used to work as a contractor to various government agencies, federal and state. If you could only see the waste you would be astonished. I got so depressed at the environment of profligate waste that I stopped accepting work for government. All day every day I got the strong feeling that the agencies I worked for were in the business of flushing double handfulls of hundred dollar bills down the toilet as their main function. That really made me a lot more sensitive to voting and issues. Before those experiences I really didn't care much about politics.

One thing that we definitely agree on is that voting is important. What I propose in addition is that informed electorate is a shady politician's worst enemy.
