This neck is being represented as a Custom Shop Relic, yet no Custom Shop logo appears on the back of the headstock. Custom Shop, or not? Does the name J Uribe mean anything to anyone?

That was part of Fender's "shortstop shredders" CS limited edition. Hard to find, dude.

Turns out it's NOT a Custom Shop neck.

There are many disreputable sellers on Ebay. Good you did some checking first.

So he tells me it's NOT a Custom Shop neck, but that it's AVRI, and therefore American made. So I bought it. I received it today and immediately brought my '62 reissue body and the neck to my tech, a very reputable guy with a long history of building, repairing and refinishing guitars:

He said (paraphrasing):

"It’s impossible to tell whether this neck is American made or not because the serial numbers are missing. I’ve never seen this stamp (“RELIC”) on any Fender neck. The bar code stickers are missing, too. As far as the condition of the neck goes, it’s warped from top to bottom. Adjusting the truss rod full (after oiling the nut) reveals a convex treble side and a concave bass string side. It would be near impossible to set this neck properly given that warp. If you paid $50 bucks for this I’d say it might be worth trying to set it up, but I wouldn’t put this neck on that body if you have a choice. I’d ask for your money back and find a certifiable Fender replacement for it.”

Here are some pictures: American made, or not?

Brother I suspect that you've been "had".

Fishy things I've noticed in the pics:
1) The headstock decals aren't correctly positioned and it looks like one is on top of the lacquer.
2) I've never seen anything imprinted in a fender neck before (relic)
3) it looks like the back of the headstock was lacquered with the tuning keys on. (fender NEVER did that)

In addition to that, the darned thing is hella warped so even if it was legit you don't want it.

I hope you paid for it with PayPal. At the very least if the seller didn't mention that it was crooked as a dogs hind leg you can set up a dispute through them and in all probability, get your money back.

I'd buy a fender licensed neck from Warmoth or Stewart Macdonald and add the headstock decal yourself.

Thanks for your input and advice. I appreciate it very much!

I'm returning the neck to the seller, but not without having to suffer some indignities. He's hella pissed, but he agreed to refund my money (in hopes of avoiding negative feedback).

Thanks again!

I found this picture interesting... it has the same "J Uribe" stamp on the neck. This website claims that J. Uribe is one of Fender's master builders. I'm not saying that the neck you purchased is or is not a fake... but there's at least one other that has a J. Uribe stamp.

I saw that after Googling "J Uribe" (also rediscovering Juan Uribe of Rockies/White Sox fame) and it gave me some comfort. Nonetheless, the neck is going back to the seller and I'm still looking for one to put on my '62 RI body.

Thanks for your help!

Hey fellas, you can buy a name stamp at Staples or Office Depot with any name you want. There were waaaay to many irregularities with that neck for it to be legitimate. IMHO
