I just wanted to start up a topic on this for the following reasons:

1. It happened to me twice.
2. It happened to my friend several times, even though it's rare.
3. I want to hear other stories because it's weird/fascinating/nice to know you're not alone.

If you don't know what it is, here's the def -
Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from an REM state, but the body is still paralyzed. This leaves the person fully conscious, but unable to move. In addition, the state may be accompanied by terrifying hallucinations. This may last from seconds to minutes.

When this happened to me, I was just falling asleep. I was still conscious, as it says. Then I felt a hand glide across the blankets at my side. I was too scared to turn around, but when I finally decided I should, I discovered I couldn't move. I could barely see anything, as if someone glued my eyes shut. So then I tried to scream, but no sound came out. All I could think was, "How could this happen? I'm not dreaming! I'm awake!" Then I saw a shadow by my bed and heard a quiet voice. I sort of remember being carried upstairs, but, as it says, all of this is a hallucination. It's not real.

It happened to me once when I was about 7. I awoke to the feeling of a hand on my leg. I wanted to scream but couldn't. Wanted to move but couldn't. Then normal sensation came back and I realized it was my own hand. It was pretty scary for a 7 year old kid. It's never happened since.

It has happened to me a couple of times. Weird. Some say that it might be behind most if not all "UFO abductions".

According to various articles I've read, some psychologists believe that such a state may account for tales from the middle ages where people reported witches sitting on their chests. Another variant has a warlock standing at the end of their bed but using his powers to prevent the victim from moving.

In our times, so they think, some conclude that the same experience is due to aliens. They contend that a lot of alien "possession" stories bear a high degree of similarity to those in the middle ages, if you substitute "alien" for witch or warlock.

The experience has happened to me and it can be very scary to say the least. You believe that you're awake, that something very bad is happening and you can't move. In my case, it's usually the more mundane thought that someone's broken into my house and is standing there watching me. Yet, I can't open my eyes, turn over or act.

WHEW ... sure glad these experiences are infrequent in in reality don't last very long!

Yeah, the pressure on the chest is supposed to be a normal thing...my friend said he keeps seeing this old hag standing close to his bed. And apparently another person in his family saw the exact same thing.

Really makes you wonder what it means when people see the SAME people by their bed. That's what really freaks me out. Ghosts? Eh, I dunno.

This happens to my quite frequently. Maybe once or twice every 2 weeks. I can't move my body but i never have any hallucinations.

I heard it helps get out of Sleep paralysis if you wiggle your toes..

Ah yes, sleep paralysis, a very interesting topic. My twin brother has been experiencing episodes of sleep paralysis throughout his youth. We were previously clueless to what exactly it was he was experiencing, and had difficulty believing his descriptions. Coincidently, my brother and I are now Clinical Psychology undergraduates, and through studying sleep disorders for an abnormal psychology course, we were finally able to pinpoint what it was he was experiencing. They can be quite terrifying, and luckily for him, it hasn't been occurring for a year now.

Interesting... I have EXACTLY the opposite problem... somnambulism. (Sleepwalking) Unfortunately, if I'm not medicated, my brain does not "disconnect" from my body during deep sleep, and I wander all over the place doing strange things.

I've had it happen to me a few times. Nothing very exciting to tell. I didn't have any pressure or feelings of being touched.

It felt like I was asleep and awake at the same time. I couldn't move at all. I was trying to get myself to completely wake up, and move again, but it took me some time to be able to.
