I just looked up the date I saw Jimi, it was a Tuesday night on July 30th,1968 at the Independence Hall in Baton Rouge La. The opening act was a band called The Soft Machine. I was 16 years old at the time!! 8)

Wow man, that must have been something. I can't say I didn't have the chance to see him, he did England plenty. It's that old one I suppose' You take it for granted when it's there, although in my defence I was pretty busy with our band at the time, didn't get much chance to see many other bands.
Soft Machine. That name brings back memories as well, I'm trying to think of some stuff they did. Never mind it'll come back later.

A slight point of tension in my marriage is that my wife saw Hendrix and I never did. She was very young at the time - and I was at infant school.

This was in 1967 at the Odeon in Manchester, and Jimi was well down a bill that also included Cat Stephens, the Walker Brothers and Engelbert Humperdink! She says half the audience were middle-aged ladies who'd come for Engelbert, the other half had come to see this strange new guitar phenomenon who was just breaking at the time. My wife remembers the crowd eyed one another like hostile football supporters.

Two shows a night; less than half an hour of Hendrix in each show. My wife doesn't remember quite what his guitar tone was like, but she says it was "very loud". Actually, she had gone along for the Walker Brothers: hmm.

Cheers - C

Since I am too young to have seen any of the greats live, I asked my stepdad since he has good taste in music. In his opinion his fav is Clapton. He did also see Hendrix live and tells me it was amazing.

And going back to the OP...I was fortunate to be raised by someone in the industry, and at 13 I already owned my first Strat..a nice vintage 70's, maple body white pickguard, maple neck and a hardtail. I could only play a few chords at the time. I brought that guitar with me to summer camp. Signed out some cheap amp and threw it on the bed..plugged that strat straight in, played an A chord..and it was beautiful. The girls thought I was amazing. But I sucked. The guitar just sounded so rich, full and toney that it made it seem like I was good...lol.

fhopkins: It was right around July of 1968 that I went with a couple of friends to Tulane Stadium in New Orleans (the old Sugar Bowl) and saw the same show you sqaw in Baton Rouge. I also was 16 and spent about two months on restriction for getting home after daylight. If you ever traveled Old Highway 90 from New Orleans to Biloxi, you know what I mean. The show was worth it, as are the bragging rights to this day. No one else I even know can say they sqaw Hendrix!

I saw Trower the first time in 1974 on his first US tour after going solo. He was opening for Alvin Lee/Ten Years After and the Doobies. He played both a white and sunburst Strat, both with maple necks. Just blew the crowd away and made Alvin Lee somewhat of an anticlimax...

Joey Mazzola from the band Sponge. Through a Naylor Superdrive head. The tone was to die for, in Nashville TN. THey headlined a huge festival called Edge of the Cumberland. Strat tone for days!

Most recently it was Bonnie Raitt and she smoked with her slide playing!

In all time, probably Jeff Beck when he was with Jan Hammer.

Hi,
Did you see Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer live. Beck is one of my all time favourites. He did some good stuff with Hammer, seen a few video's and got the albums. ' The Final Peace ' is a bit special. Probably one of the best recorded sound of a guitar [ not sure what he used on that ]

SRV and Hendrix are both strat players and are amazing! They both had strat sounds. Too bad they didn't live long, Stevie was the best in my opinion. Hendrix is a totaly diffrent style and because I'm a blues player, Hendrix was nothing compared to Stevie Ray!

Well I wouldn't say "nothing" compared to him..just a different approach to similar stylings I guess puts it best. Hence SRV like to cover Jimis stuff. And Jimi covered bob dylan and the beatles..go figure?

Yeah, and I find Stevie was a good cover for Hendrix. Good point by saying "A diffrent approach". That was what I was trying to explain, I gess it was at the back of my head!
