It's always going to be a small club situation, where you can hear the amp rather than the PA and venue acoustics.

So, Joe Bonamassa playing his gold sparkle Strat through a very complicated amp setup, in a tiny venue in Tavistock on Dartmoor, west of England, one moonlit Hound-of-the-Baskervilles summer night a couple of years ago. Incomparable.

Yeh, I know what you mean about the small clubs, it's the only way to really appreciate a band, you get the full ' hit '
In the early sixties we played the cellar clubs, fantastic sound in those places. We were only young then, like 13-14 years old and we played a local one, we were like the matinee show on saturday afternoon for the kids. But we were able to go back in at night and watch the big boys laying it down, some good bands a lot of the top guys played there. I will always remember Alexis Korner showing me his Gibson SG in the dressing room, he was a fantastic guy had time for everyone. A few years later we actually played the Cavern in Liverpool, it didn't seem like anything then but looking back now it was. There won't be too many around that can say that , pity the Beatles were long gone by then. Anyway happy days.

Sappy reply here, but I've gotta say it was my son when he actually played something recognizable on one of my Strats (the old 1974). Y'know, one of those proud father moments.

Besides that I'd have to say Rory Gallagher

For me it was Uli Roth playing with the "Scorpions" in about 1975/76 in a small club in the north of England. An arctic white with maple fretboard, not an effect in sight and the sound was amazing.

Not to take anything away from Uli..but hey..a vintage strat with a maple..my mother would sound good on that. Kidding aside, I was fortunate to have owned a few..and they really incredibly awesomely, juicily sound good plugged straight into the amp..why can't they do that anymore????? Not saying all new strats sound bad..because they do not..but there's no comparison.

Hey man,
Yeh, straight into a Marshall stack, woah I can't describe it I just haven't got the words. Know what you mean about guys not doing it anymore, these young guys think you have to have all the effects, well they need to get out and hear some of the old masters at work.
Uli had that guitar set-up just right, crystal clear silky tones with as much sustain as he wanted on the laid back songs and then gut ripping aggression on the heavy stuff. He wasn't quiet but the volume didn't affect the sound quality, you know like his amp was clipping but not distorting too much, nice sustain. Everything must have been just right that night , the guitar, the amp, the room, here I am still talking about it 30 years later. It's a bit like finding the perfect beer, you need the perfect setting and of course..........the perfect thirst.

That's not sappy man, that's a proud and loving father. More parents should support their children in some sort of musical intrest! 8)

Wow man, that must have been something. I can't say I didn't have the chance to see him, he did England plenty. It's that old one I suppose' You take it for granted when it's there, although in my defence I was pretty busy with our band at the time, didn't get much chance to see many other bands.
Soft Machine. That name brings back memories as well, I'm trying to think of some stuff they did. Never mind it'll come back later.

SRV. I saw him in a small bar in Houston waaaaaaaaay back when. It was most amazing. The name of the bar was Shakespeare's at the time a lot of Texas rock and Blues bands used it to try out new material.
