For me it was Uli Roth playing with the "Scorpions" in about 1975/76 in a small club in the north of England. An arctic white with maple fretboard, not an effect in sight and the sound was amazing.

I never saw Hendrix live. He must have been something else.

If you listen to the live version of 'Belief' by John Mayer
(The one off of Where The Light Is) He does the amazing intro to it and his tone in my opinion is f*ck*ng amazing!!!
I must listen to it several times a day.

Unfortunatly he is dead. so I never got to see him live. The man who took the strat to the stratoshpere...SRV. Although it would have been cool as anything to see Hendrix..but he made sounds with a strat..SRV made a strat sound ..well no words for it.

Now I have seen Robert Cray live...and , well most of you know..he's no sloutch on the strat..and he can sing really soulfully.

SRV and Hendrix are both strat players and are amazing! They both had strat sounds. Too bad they didn't live long, Stevie was the best in my opinion. Hendrix is a totaly diffrent style and because I'm a blues player, Hendrix was nothing compared to Stevie Ray!

Not to take anything away from Uli..but hey..a vintage strat with a maple..my mother would sound good on that. Kidding aside, I was fortunate to have owned a few..and they really incredibly awesomely, juicily sound good plugged straight into the amp..why can't they do that anymore????? Not saying all new strats sound bad..because they do not..but there's no comparison.

Well I wouldn't say "nothing" compared to him..just a different approach to similar stylings I guess puts it best. Hence SRV like to cover Jimis stuff. And Jimi covered bob dylan and the beatles..go figure?

I agree, for me that's what makes music amazing.
